William C. Jacobson, MD - Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sports Medicine, Knee Replacement

William Jacobson, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in arthroscopic surgery for the knee and shoulder. He also focuses on cartilage restoration for the knee, as well as total knee arthroplasties.

Dr. Jacobson earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa. After medical school, he completed an internship and residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, and a sports medicine fellowship at the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center. During his fellowship, Dr. Jacobson worked with team physicians for the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Minnesota Twins. He continues his passion caring for athletes, leading Capital Orthopaedics as the team physicians for the Iowa Wild, in addition to high schools in the greater Des Moines area.

Active in the industry, Dr. Jacobson maintains memberships with the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and Iowa Orthopaedic Society.

 

Mark Fish, DO - Orthopaedic Surgery, Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine

Mark Fish, DO, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who sees patients of all ages. While he diagnoses and treats patients for all general orthopaedic conditions, he specializes in total joint arthroplasty of the hip, knee, and shoulder, arthroscopic surgery, and sports medicine.

A native of Des Moines, Dr. Fish earned his bachelor’s degree from the Moody Bible Institute on the Near North Side of Chicago before moving back to Iowa to complete his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University. Following medical school graduation, he moved to Michigan to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Michigan State University in East Lansing. He continued his education with a joint replacement and sports medicine fellowship in Indianapolis.

Dr. Fish is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and expertise as a lecturer and member of the clinical faculty at Des Moines University. He is currently the vice president of the Adult Reconstructive Arthritis Section of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics.

Todd C. Peterson, DO - Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine

Todd Peterson, DO, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with extensive experience performing orthopaedic surgery to address conditions of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow.

A native of Des Moines, Dr. Peterson earned his medical degree from Des Moines University. He relocated to Detroit to complete his orthopaedic residency at Ascension St. John Hospital, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

Following his fellowship training, Dr. Peterson returned to Iowa, where he currently serves on the faculty of special medicine at Des Moines University in addition to his duties at Capital Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Dr. Peterson is a sought-after lecturer both at the local and national level.

Dr. Peterson strives to educate, advocate, and provide outstanding care for every patient who entrusts him with their orthopaedic concerns. Outside of medicine, he is active in his church and enjoys spending family time with his wife and their children.

 

William R. Boulden, MD - Orthopaedic Medicine

William Boulden, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with 40 years of experience specializing in general orthopaedic care. This includes diagnosing and treating ailments and degenerative diseases affecting bones, joints, and muscles, as well as disorders of the spine and worker’s compensation needs related to orthopaedic care.

A native of Lenox, Iowa, Dr. Boulden earned both his bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He completed a two-year general surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

Dr. Boulden is a member of several professional societies including the Iowa Orthopaedic Society and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Mid-American Orthopaedic Association, and the North American Spine Society

 

Michael Nguyen, DO - Orthopaedic Walk-In Care, Sports Medicine

Michael Nguyen, DO, is a board certified primary care sports medicine physician. He specializes in non-surgical treatment of patients with issues ranging from acute injuries (like fractures) to chronic conditions (such as osteoarthritis or tendinopathies.) His goal is to get patients and athletes of all ages back to their active lifestyles as quickly and as safely as possible. He is skilled in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound to aid in the diagnosis of injuries and target procedures.

Originally from Canada, Dr. Nguyen completed a master’s degree in epidemiology, statistics, and hyperbaric medicine before earning his medical degree from the Saba University School of Medicine in Saba, Netherlands Antilles. He completed his residency at Northeast Iowa Family Medicine Residency in Waterloo, Iowa. During his time in Northeast Iowa, he worked as an emergency physician in Waverly, Boone, Independence, and several other small-town communities. From his work in the ER, Dr. Nguyen saw there was a need for a more integrated approach of musculoskeletal injuries and decided to further his training. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai-Atlantic Health in Morristown, New Jersey, where he had the opportunity to care for athletes at all levels and ages including high school, NCAA, and professional sports teams, such as the New York Jets.

Dr. Nguyen pioneered the startup of the Orthopaedic Urgent Care at CNOS in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota in 2013, working on staff there for 7 years (including 5 years as the Orthopaedic Urgent Care Director, a role he took over in 2015.) He joined the team at Capital Orthopaedics in August of 2020, where he helped establish and continues to direct the Orthopaedic Walk-in Clinic in Clive, as well as assisting with the practice’s duties as team physicians for the Iowa Wild and various high schools in the metro.

Zaki Ibrahim, MD - Orthopaedic Spine Surgery

Zak Ibrahim, MD, is a board certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon who embraces a conservative, open-minded approach.

Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Ibrahim completed medical school at the University of Minnesota in 1991. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society for his academic accomplishments while in medical school. He then went on to complete a prestigious orthopedic surgery residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, in 1996. Finally, Dr. Ibrahim completed his sub-specialization in the field of spinal surgery at the University of California, San Diego, in 1997. During his time there, Dr. Ibrahim was the lead author of numerous scientific publications and several book chapters.

He joins us from Denver, where he spent the last two decades leading the area in minimally invasive techniques. As one of the first surgeons in the US to utilize robotic guidance for spinal surgery, Dr. Ibrahim is committed to advancing the field through research and continuing education.

Eric Reynolds, MD - Orthopaedic Walk-In Care, Sports Medicine

Eric Reynolds, MD, is a board-certified physician of sports medicine. He grew up in Coralville before attending the University of Iowa for both his undergraduate and medical degrees (forever a die-hard fan - go Hawks!)  He met his wife, Lauren, in medical school, and they both went to Albuquerque following graduation to complete residencies at the University of New Mexico.

After 4 years in Albuquerque (an extra year spent as Chief Resident), he moved to Cleveland where he completed his sports medicine fellowship at University Hospitals/Rainbow Babies and Children's. There, he treated patients and athletes of all ages while working with local high schools, Kent State University, and the Cleveland Browns.

Dr. Reynolds moved back to Iowa in 2019. That fall, he started working for MercyOne, where he ran the sports medicine practice while also being the medical director of the pediatric urgent care at MercyOne Clive.

He specializes in musculoskeletal complaints, diagnostic ultrasound, and concussion management with associated return-to-play decisions. He has expertise in diagnosing and managing many common musculoskeletal injuries for patients of all ages such as acute muscle or ligament injury, non-surgical fractures, osteoarthritis —including ultrasound guided injections of any joint, stress fractures, exercise associated syncope and dyspnea, and pediatric overuse injuries.

Dr. Reynolds joined the Capital team in March 2023 and works full-time at our Ankeny office (located in The District), where he runs the new Ankeny Orthopaedic Walk-In Clinic (open Monday through Friday from 8am-4:30pm) while also seeing patients by scheduled appointment.

Matthew Cooper, Psy.D., MSCP – Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Matthew Cooper, Psy.D., MSCP is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with additional training to provide integrated psychological services and medication management for the treatment of mental health disorders in the state of Iowa. Dr. Cooper graduated from Grand View University in Des Moines, IA and then attended The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute where he earned a Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In 2021, Dr. Cooper earned a Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology from New Mexico State University, which allowed him to become the third conditional prescribing psychologist in Iowa. Currently Dr. Cooper works at Resilience Therapy + Assessment Services, PLLC where he provides integrative psychological services including psychotherapy and medication management.
