  IOWA WILD SWEEPS WEEKEND IN CHARLOTTE, ROLLS WITH 7-2 WIN

Iowa Returns Home Thursday to Host Chicago

Charlotte, NC – The Iowa Wild (3-1-0-0, 6 points) defeated the Charlotte Checkers (2-2-0-0, 4 points) 7-2 in front of 3,687 fans at Time Warner Cable Arena on Sunday night. Forwards Erik Haula, Kris Foucault and Zack Phillips each scored a goal and added two assists to lead the charge. In all, five different Wild skaters, including Carson McMillan and Jake Dowell, finished with a multi-point game. Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper (1-1) stopped 25 Checkers shots for the win. Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy (1-2) suffered the loss with 16 saves on 20 shots. Murphy was pulled early in the second period after allowing the fourth goal of the night. The Wild returns for a five-game home stand starting with Chicago at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Iowa jumped out in front 1-0 just 44 seconds into the opening frame, as forward Kris Foucault jammed in a rebound for his first tally of the season. Defenseman Tyler Cuma fired the initial shot on net from the blueline and Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy could not contain the rebound. Center Erik Haula added an assist on the play by winning the faceoff back to Cuma. The Wild doubled its lead at 5:10 of the period, as Warren Peters poked in a rebound for his first goal of the season. Forwards Zack Phillips and Jake Dowell each added an assist, as Iowa claimed a 2-0 lead. The Checkers clawed back to trim the deficit to 2-1 at 7:35 of the first period. Justin Shugg’s shot was kicked out by Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper. The rebound was picked up and backhanded past Kuemper by defenseman Mark Flood for his third goal of the year. The Wild closed out the scoring in the first frame with only 14 seconds left in the period, taking a 3-1 lead into the break. Carson McMIllan found a rebound in the Checkers crease and fired it past Murphy for his first goal of the season. Haula added an assist on the play for the two-goal lead.

In the second period, the Wild expanded its lead to 4-1 after Jake Dowell scored off the pads of Murphy at 3:27 of the period. Zack Phillips added the lone assist on Dowell’s first of the season. The goal ended the night for Charlotte’s Mike Murphy, who made 16 saves on 20 shots in 23:37 of work. Jesse Deckert replaced Murphy, who was pulled by Charlotte Head Coach Jeff Daniels. Iowa used its power play to increase the lead to 5-1 at 11:08 of the middle frame. Erik Haula found a rebound in front of the Checkers net. Haula lifted a shot over the shoulder of goalie Jesse Deckert. Defenseman Jonathon Blum and forward Kris Foucault each had an assist on Haula’s first goal of the year. The Wild made it 6-1 at 18:47 of the second frame. Defenseman Kyle Medvec set up Phillips, who ripped a one-timer off the crossbar and into the Charlotte net, scoring his second goal of the season.

In the third period, Charlotte’s Chris Terry scored a power-play goal at 5:33 of the final frame. Victor Rask set up the goal, finding Terry at the blueline for his third goal of the season and a 6-2 Iowa lead. The Wild finished off the scoring with 1:18 left on the clock. Carson McMillan blasted a shot from the right-wing circle, beating Deckert for his second goal of the night. Defenseman Brian Connelly and forward Kris Foucault added assist on the final goal of the night for the 7-2 final.

The Wild returns home on Thursday, Oct. 24 to host the Chicago Wolves at 7:05 p.m. The game marks the beginning of a five-game home stand for the Wild, which will also host the Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 5:05 p.m. The game will feature the Subway Family Four Pack, with four tickets, four hot dogs, four hats, four sodas and four popcorns, starting at $44. The game on Oct. 27 will also feature a Halloween Costume Party for fans and a postgame skate.
