CHECKERS HAND WILD 5 -1 DEFEAT

Iowa Hosts Charlotte on Saturday at 7 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild (0-5-0-0, 0 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (2-4-0-0, 4 points) 5-1 in front of 4,944 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night. The Checkers claimed a 3-0 first-period lead and finished up with a four-goal road win over the Wild. Four different Charlotte skaters registered a multi-point night in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. Forwards Chad Larose (1g,1a), Phil Di Giuseppe (1g,1a), Greg Nemisz (1g, 1a) and defenseman Michael Jordan (2a) all contributed in the win. Charlotte goalie Drew MacIntyre (2-3-0) stopped 26 shots for the win. Iowa forward Jordan Schroeder led the Wild with one goal and five shots on net. Wild goalie John Curry (0-2-0) stopped 20 shots in the defeat. Iowa hosts Charlotte again at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Checkers took a 1-0 lead 1:24 into the first period when rookie forward Phil Di Giuseppe scored off a centering pass near the crease to score. Forwards Greg Nemisz and Chad LaRose set up the goal. Rookie forward Carter Sandlak increased Charlotte’s lead at 12:58 with a rebound goal, giving the Checkers a 2-0 lead. Forwards A.J. Jenks and Brendan Woods fed Sandlak the puck on play. Charlotte widened its lead to 3-0 at the 16:29 mark of the period when forward Greg Nemisz fired a wrist shot from the left wing to score his first goal of the year. Defensemen Michal Jordan and Keegan Lowe each picked up assists on the goal.   

The Wild cut the Checkers lead to 3-1 merely 1:15 into the second period when forward Jordan Schroeder scored his first goal of the season. Forward Zack Phillips and defenseman Alex Gudbranson each tallied an assist on the play. Schroeder found a loose puck in the Checkers slot and slipped it by Drew MacIntyre for his team’s first goal of the night.

In the first 34 seconds of the third period, Charlotte went up by three with when rookie forward Brock McGinn scored his first goal of the season. Alex Aleardi assisted McGinn on the goal that made it 4-1 Checkers. LaRose put Charlotte back up by four, deflecting a shot by Giuseppe into the net at the 7:39 mark of third. Jordan also picked up an assist on the goal that made it 5-1.

The Wild concludes a four-game home stand with Charlotte at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. The game marks Youth Sports Night, where the first 1,500 youths (12 and under) receive a White Iowa Wild home jersey, compliments of NASH FM. Prior to Saturday’s game, the Wild and NASH 97.3 FM will host a pregame Tailgate Party from 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Third St. and Crocker. The party includes free hot dogs to the first 500 fans and live music from the Ripp-Chords. Fans may play street hockey, dunk tank, car smash and participate in many more games.

Iowa embarks on a three-game road trip with stops in Milwaukee and Oklahoma City before returning home for a three-game home stand. The Wild returns home on Thursday, Nov. 6 to host Rockford at 10:30 a.m. Thursday’s game with the IceHogs is also School Field Trip Day, where the first 5,000 youths (12 and under) receive an Iowa Wild drawstring backpack, compliments of NASH FM. Iowa rounds out its home stand against Chicago with a two-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9. Saturday night is Ladies Night, where the first 2,500 fans receive an Iowa Wild ice scraper sponsored by Greater Iowa Credit Union. All ladies (21 and over) may purchase glasses of wine for $1.00. The Wild will also host Special Olympics Night on Saturday. Sunday is Pucks N’ Paws day, where the first 2,500 fans receive pet tags, compliments of Anderson Animal Hospital. It is also a Subway Family Four Pack game, where fans may purchase four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, starting at $48.      

The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team’s 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Season tickets to see the Wild play at Wells Fargo Arena start at just $9 per game.
