Chicago jumped out to the game’s first lead just 1:26 into the game. Right wing Scooter Vaughn held the puck in at the right point of the Iowa zone. Vaughn floated a wrist shot towards the net and into traffic. Left wing Ty Rattie tipped the puck off the Iowa post and past goalie Leland Irving. Rattie’s 10th goal of the season gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Chicago made it 2-0 at 9:31 as forward Jeremy Welsh blasted a slapshot past Irving. The shot went off the stick of an Iowa defender and through the netting. Welsh’s 12th of the year was assisted by Dmitri Jaskin. Iowa countered less than a minute later at 10:15, as Grayson Downing capitalized off a two-on-one for his 15th goal of the year. Left wing Jordan Schroeder helped set up the play for the 2-1 Iowa deficit after one period of play.

In the second, the Wild struck for the period’s only goal. Using a 5-on-4 power play early in the period, defenseman Tyson Strachan ripped the puck to the net. Center Rob Bordson found the rebound and backhanded the puck past Copley for his sixth goal of the season. Right wing Zack Mitchell had the initial assist, as Iowa tied the game 2-2 through two periods of play.

After a scoreless third the two teams skated to overtime tied 2-2.  Iowa defenseman Maxime Fortunus snapped a pass to center ice for Zack Mitchell.  Iowa’s leading goal scorer moved in and then blasted a slapshot past Copley, scoring his 19th goal of the year and lifting Iowa past Chicago 2:18 into overtime for the 3-2 final.
