GAME #2 RECAP: WILD (HOME TEAM) VS. HURRICANES:  4-2 LOSS

The Wild allowed an early, first period marker, as the Hurricanes stole an errant pass in the Wild slot and converted for a 1-0 advantage.  The goal, scored by Valentin Zykov came just 6:42 into the contest.

Carolina tacked on two more goals before intermission, to lead 3-0 after 20 minutes.  Shots in the first period favored the Hurricanes, 14-8.

In the second period Minnesota attempted to shift the momentum, registering 13 shots and generating some quality scoring chances.  However, the Hurricanes scored the only goal of the period, and after 40 minutes, the Wild trailed 4-0.

Winger Alex Tuch got Minnesota on the board in the third period as he buried a breakaway chance at the 14:52 mark.  Tuch, who had several great chances in the game, earned his first goal of the tournament by firing a forehand snap shot past Hurricanes goaltender Callum Booth (27 saves).

With their goaltender pulled for basically the last four minutes of regulation play, the Wild struck again with 16 seconds left.  Zach Schroeder, the younger brother of Minnesota / Iowa forward Jordan Schroeder, buried a chance from the left side to cut the deficit to 4-2.  However, the final seconds ticked down, and Minnesota dropped to 0-2 in the tournament.

The Wild ended the night with a 29-24 edge in shots.  Minnesota failed to score on their lone power play try, while the Hurricanes went 0-3.

NOTES:

·       Winger Sam Anas left the game in the first period, after getting hit hard while carrying the puck into the offensive zone.  Following the hit, Tuch fought Hurricanes defenseman Tyler Ganly, the player who knocked Anas onto the ice.  Anas did not return to action following the hit, and Mario Lucia took his spot on the line with Joel Eriksson Ek and Tuch.

·       Four Wild players tied with a team-high four shots (Nick Saracino, Adam Gilmour, Alex Petan and Tuch).

·       Adam Vay was the goaltender of record, stopping 20 of the 24 shots he faced

QUOTES:

·       Mario Lucia on the team’s effort despite the slow start: “Being down 3-0 in the first [period] can kind of take the wind out of your sails but guys are here to compete and win spots, and there’s no letup from his team.”

·       Christoph Bertschy: “[The] first period wasn’t our best period but the second and third, we battled our [butts] off and [I’m] really proud of the team.”

·       Coach Lalonde: “I really appreciate how the guys responded.  We were down 3-0 and could have easily packed it in.  We had another injury where we lost a top-six guy [Anas].  And our guys responded very well – played a really good second period and then won the third period.  That’s a good sign going forward for Monday.”
