GAME #3 RECAP: WILD (HOME TEAM) VS. RANGERS: 2-1 L

After dropping its first two games of the tournament, Minnesota looked to gain some early momentum in Monday’s afternoon affair against the New York Rangers.

And the Wild prospects did just that, as winger Christoph Bertschy scored on the power play at 12:37 of the opening period.  Defenseman Gustav Bouramman set him up in the high slot, resulting in Bertschy’s first marker of the tournament.

The Wild led 1-0 at the first intermission, outshooting the Rangers, 12-8.

Minnesota continued to push the pace in the second period, and at one point late in the stanza, led overall in shots, 23-13.  However, the Rangers tallied with just 3:16 left in the frame, evening the score.  Forward Jimmy Vesey, the 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner, registered the equalizer.

Entering the Wild zone on an odd-man rush, Vesey completed the play by flipping a shot from in tight past Wild goaltender Steve Michalek (22 saves).  Thus, the two teams skated to their dressing rooms tied at 1-1.

Vesey struck again in the third period, scoring the game-winning goal in the final minute of play, as he jammed a wraparound try off of Michalek and just inside the near post.  Prior to that tally both sides had opportunities to pull in front.  Shots in the third period finished even at eight apiece.

Minnesota outshot New York 32-24 on the afternoon, and the Wild recorded their first power play goal of the tournament, going 1-3 in the game.
