IOWA STUNS CHICAGO IN OT 4-3

Wild to Play in Rockford on Saturday at 7 PM

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (20-16-5-4, 49 points) defeated the Chicago Wolves (26-16-3-2, 57 points) 4-3 in overtime in front of 7,273 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night. Iowa forward Justin Mercier scored the game-winning goal in overtime, helping his club pick up points in an AHL season-high ten straight games. Wild goalie John Curry (5-2-2) made 32 saves in the victory, including 15 in the second period. Jim McKenzie, Warren Peters, and Kris Foucault also scored, lifting the Wild’s record to 10-11-3-1 at Wells Fargo Arena. Matt Climie (6-8-0) stopped 18 shots in the loss. The game marked Iowa’s seventh straight game decided in overtime or a shootout. Iowa visits Rockford at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Wild opened the scoring at 2:22 of the second period with a goal by forward Jim McKenzie. After a turnover in the Chicago zone, the right wing chipped in a backhander, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead. Iowa forward Curt Gogol assisted on McKenzie’s second goal of the season. The Wolves countered with a goal at 10:29 by forward Sebastian Wannstrom. The right wing fired a quick shot following a Wolves’ faceoff win in the Iowa zone, tying the game 1-1. Chicago forward Christian Hanson picked up the assist on the goal. The Wolves claimed the lead at 18:45 with a goal by Taylor Chorney. The defender skated down the Iowa zone on a 2-on-1, beating goalie John Curry five-hole. Forward Nathan Longpre assisted on the play, helping his club take a 2-1 lead. The Wild tied things up with ten seconds remaining in the second period with a goal by forward Warren Peters. The center backhanded in a loose puck from the slot, tying the game 2-2. Iowa defender Jonathon Blum and forward Marc Hagel each assisted on Peters’ seventh goal of the season.

The Wolves reclaimed the lead at 5:26 of the third period with a goal by forward Adam Cracknell. The Chicago center rifled in a slap shot from the left-wing circle, giving his club a 3-2 lead. Wolves defender David Shields and forward Keith Aucoin each assisted on the play. Wild tied the game 3-3 at 6:39 with a goal by Kris Foucault. The forward blasted in a wrist shot past Chicago goalie Matt Climie, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Iowa defender Brian Connelly and forward Zack Phillips each picked up an assist on the game-tying goal.

The Wild won the game at 2:59 of overtime with a goal by forward Justin Mercier. Defenseman Steven Kampfer fed Mercier a cross-ice pass, helping his club defeat the Wolves 4-3. Connelly also picked up an assist on the game-winner.  

Iowa plays on Saturday in Rockford at 7 p.m. before heading into the All-Star break. The team returns to the ice after the break, playing in Milwaukee on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.  The team returns to Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:05 p.m. to host the Rockford IceHogs. Saturday the Wild celebrates Pink in the Rink, presented by Sammons Financial. In a partnership with the Susan G. Komen of Iowa, the Wild are encouraging fans to wear pink to create awareness for breast cancer awareness.  The players will wear Pink in the Rink themed jerseys for the game. Fans will have a chance to purchase the game-worn jerseys in a live postgame jersey auction. The auction benefits Susan G. Komen of Iowa. Also, the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive Pink LED light-up thundersticks.  The team will conclude a weekend set with Rockford on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 4:05 p.m. The game is Superheroes Day, where superheroes and local mascots, including Cy and Herky, make an appearance. The first 2,000 fans in attendance receive an Iowa Wild superhero poster. Fans may also purchase the Subway Family Four Pack for the game, which features four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, and Subway coupons starting at $44.
