IOWA WILD EDGE CHICAGO 5-4 IN A SHOOTOUT
Iowa Welcomes Grand Rapids at 5:05 PM On Sunday
Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (4-1-0-0, 8 points) defeated the Chicago Wolves (3-3-0-1, 7 points) 5-4 in a shootout in front of 4,318 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday night. Iowa forward Taylor Matson ended a sudden death shootout by beating Chicago goalie Jake Allen in the sixth round for the victory. In the previous round, Carson McMillan scored to force the sudden death shootout. After replacing Johan Gustafsson halfway through the game, Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper (2-1-0) was credited with the victory. Kuemper stopped all 21 shots in regulation and turned aside three of six in the shootout. Wild forwards Tyler Graovac, Raphael Bussieres, Kris Foucault and Brett Bulmer each scored in regulation. Chicago goalie Jake Allen (3-1-1) was credited with the loss, he stopped 27 of 31 in regulation and two of six shootout attempts. The Wild continues a five-game home stand with Grand Rapids at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.
In the first period, the Wild opened up the scoring at 5:14 with Tyler Graovac’s second goal of the season. Kris Foucault worked the puck to defenseman Tyler Cuma at the blueline. Cuma rifled a shot to the Chicago net and goalie Jake Allen made the initial save. Graovac scored off a rebound for the 1-0 lead. Chicago answered back with a pair of goals, starting with Shane Harper’s tally at 5:58. Harper put in a rebound after Johan Gustafsson made a save on a Sergey Andronov shot. Harper’s first goal of the year was also assisted by David Shields. The Wolves claimed a 2-1 lead at 7:46 of the opening frame, as Shields scored his second goal of the season. Joining the rush with Keith Aucoin and Chris Porter, Shields slipped a rebound past Gustafsson for the one-goal lead. The Wild countered to tie the game 2-2 at 11:45. Rookie Raphael Bussieres snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Allen for the equalizer. Warren Peters and Zack Phillips each had an assist on the first goal of Bussieres’ pro career.
In the second period, Keith Aucoin started Chicago’s scoring with a goal at the 2:28 mark, giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead. Aucoin’s first goal of the season came from Harper and Andronov. Off the ensuing face-off, Brett Bulmer scored an unassisted goal, tying the game 3-3. The Wild claimed a 4-3 lead at 5:24 when Kris Foucault tipped in his second goal of the year. Foucault redirected a strike from Jonathon Blum. Aucoin answered with his first goal of the night at 10:36, tying the game 4-4 off an assist from Chris Porter.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the two teams skated to a shootout. Chicago claimed a 2-0 shootout lead with goals by Harper and Corey Locke. Iowa clawed back with tallies by Zack Phillips and Erik Haula. Forward Mark Mancari scored to put Chicago in front 3-2 in the fourth round of the shootout. After a failed Wild attempt, Chicago’s Ty Rattie was stuffed by Darcy Kuemper to keep Iowa within striking distance. Facing defeat, Carson McMillan tied the shootout for Iowa in the fifth and final round. After the Wolves failed to move ahead, the Wild claimed the victory after Taylor Matson beat Allen for the game-winning goal.
The Wild remains at home on Sunday, Oct. 27 with the Grand Rapids Griffins at 5:05 p.m. The game will feature the Subway Family Four Pack, with four tickets, four hot dogs, four hats, four sodas and Subway coupons, starting at $44. Fans are also encouraged to bring winter hats, gloves and mittens for the team’s clothing drive. Each fan that brings an item to donate will receive a FREE ticket to an upcoming Iowa Wild home game. On Saturday, the first 2,500 fans will receive an Iowa Wild T-Shirt, presented by 97.3 NASH FM. It is also Ladies Night, featuring special promotions catered towards women and a chance to win lunch with Iowa Wild defenseman Corbin Baldwin. Iowa rounds out its five-game homestand on Sunday, Nov. 3 with the Milwaukee Admirals.
