IOWA TAKES DOWN TEXAS FOR FIRST HOME WIN

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (2-3-1-1, 6 points) defeated the Texas Stars (4-2-0-0, 8 points) 3-2 in front of 6,536 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. Defenseman Zach Palmquist and forward Michael Keranen each scored in the final 29 seconds of the first period, lifting the Wild to their first home victory of the season. Jordan Schroeder scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 11:55 of the third period. Iowa goalie Leland Irving (2-0-1) stopped 29 of 30 shots for his second victory of the season. Texas goalie Maxime Lagace (2-2-0) made 19 saves on 22 shots in the defeat. The Stars received goals from forwards Devin Shore and Derek Hulak. Iowa and Texas rematch tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.at Wells Fargo Arena.
Texas forward Derek Hulak opened the scoring at 8:33 of the first period. The play started in the Stars defensive zone. Center Jake Dowling set up the play, sending a breakaway pass to Hulak down the middle of the ice. Hulak snuck behind the Wild defenders and entered the zone uncontested, beating Irving and giving the Stars a 1-0 lead. Wild defenseman Zack Palmquist tied the game 1-1 at 19:32 with his first career goal. Iowa forward Christoph Bertschy was awarded the assist on the play. Bertschy won a puck battle behind the Texas net, finding Palmquist in the high slot with a tape-to-tape pass. Palmquist took care of the rest, one-timing a shot past Lagace. The Wild grabbed a 2-1 lead before heading to the locker room thanks to a penalty shot goal by forward Michael Keranen. Keranen was tripped on an offensive zone breakaway as time expired. Keranen scored on the awarded penalty shot, faking a shot and sliding the puck under Lagace’s right pad.
After a scoreless second period, Wild forward Jordan Schroeder found the back of the net at 11:55 of the third for his first power play goal of the season. Schroeder one-timed a cross crease pass from Bertschy, elevating the puck over Lagace to give the Wild a 3-1 lead. The Stars made things interesting at 17:45 thanks to a goal from forward Devin Shore. The rookie beat Irving, scoring his seventh goal in six games. Irving and the Wild shut the door the rest of the way and held on for their first victory of the season at Wells Fargo Arena.
Iowa and Texas rematch tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sunday afternoon game will also be the celebration of “Pucks and Paws” day. Fans are invited to bring their dogs to attend the game. The first 500 fans with their dog in attendance will receive an Iowa Wild themed dog bowl mat courtesy of Anderson Animal Hospital and Lazer 103.3. Iowa travels to Rockford on Friday Oct. 30 for their second matchup of the season with the IceHogs. The Wild return to Wells Fargo Arena for a pair of home games on Saturday Oct. 31 and Sunday Nov 1. Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Admirals will be at 7 p.m. Saturday night is also “Halloween Hat Trick or Treat” night at Wells Fargo Arena. Kids (12 and under) are encouraged to wear their costumes to the game and Trick-or-Treat on the concourse. Following the game the team will host a FREE post game skate. Iowa hosts Rockford on Sunday at 5 p.m. The game will include the Sunday combo pack courtesy of Subway and Star 102.5 FM.

The Iowa Wild 2015-16 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
