Iowa Returns Home For Teddy Bear Toss on Sunday at 3 PM With San Antonio

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Iowa Wild (5-20-2-3, 15 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (14-11-1-0, 29 points) 3-2 on Thursday evening in front of 5,747 fans at Bojangles Arena. Despite a late push from Iowa, the Checkers hung on as Drayson Bowman scored the eventual game-winning goal with 5:49 left in regulation. The Wild pulled within a goal twice with third-period goals by defenseman Dylan Labbe and forward Colton Beck.  Making his AHL debut, Charlotte rookie goalie Daniel Altshuler (1-0-0) stopped 24 of 26 shots for the win. Iowa goalie Leland Irving (4-11-3) made 28 saves in defeat. Checkers defenseman Michal Jordan scored twice, as his club extended its points streak to 10 games (9-0-1-0) against Iowa, dating back to last season. Iowa returns home to Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday at 6 PM CT with the San Antonio Rampage.

Similar to Tuesday night’s game, Checkers defenseman Michal Jordan opened the scoring at 8:11 of the first period. Left wing Kyle Hagel played a pass from the corner to the blueline for Rasmus Rissanen. He played the puck cross-ice to Jordan, who snapped a wrist shot to the Wild net. Leland Irving was screened on the play, as the puck snuck past the Iowa goalie for Jordan’s second goal of the year. The Checkers defenseman continued his night with his third goal of the season 3:05 later on the power play. Center Derrick Ryan worked the puck from low to high for defenseman Trevor Carrick. He found Jordon atop the right wing circle for s slapshot, that trickled past Irving for the 2-0 lead at 11:16 of the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Iowa used an early third-period power play to cut Charlotte’s lead in half at 2-1. Wild defenseman Dylan Labbe carried the puck in over the Charlotte blueline, drifting from the right wing to the center point. He floated a wrist shot through traffic and past goalie David Altshuler at 5:35 for his first goal of the season. Center Brett Sutter and forward Michael Keranen each helped set up the tally. The Checkers regained their two-goal lead at 14:11, as Drayson Bowman beat Irving with a backhand shot from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Keegan Lowe and forward Sergei Tolchinsky each had a hand in Bowman’s second goal of the year and a 3-1 lead. The Wild countered less than a minute later to pull within a goal at 3-2. Defenseman Mike Reilly circled in behind the Checkers net and slipped a pass out towards the Charlotte crease. Forward Colton Beck redirected the pass into the Checkers net for his second goal of the season at 14:11 and the game’s final goal.

Iowa returns home again on Sunday, Dec. 20 to play San Antonio at 3 p.m. Sunday’s game features the “Teddy Bear Toss”, benefitting the pediatric unit at Mercy Hospital. Iowa hosts a holiday movie watch party following the game, courtesy of More 104. After the game, fans can stick around to enjoy the movie “Elf” on the big screen, starring Will Ferrell. The game includes the Subway/Star 102.5 Combo Pack as well. The teams will rematch on Monday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Monday’s game includes free parking (until the Iowa Events Center lots are full) sponsored by HITS 99.9. The game also includes a ticket special for fans that bring their student ID’s and buy a defense-preferred ticket, receiving a second ticket for only $0.99 courtesy of HITS 99.9.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday.
