Sanders Leads Democrats, Trump Takes Republicans In Iowa Wild Straw Poll 

DES MOINES, IA  – The Iowa Wild (9-24-2-3, 23 points) were defeated by the Rockford IceHogs (21-9-2-3, 47 points) 3-1 in front of 4,510 on Sunday evening at Wells Fargo Arena. IceHogs goalie Michael Leighton (17-4-3) helped the Western Conference leaders with 34 saves for the road win. Forwards Ryan Haggerty and Chris DeSouza each scored second period goals, as Rockford pulled away from Iowa in the middle frame. Wild goalie Leland Irving (5-13-3) stopped 28 in the defeat, as Iowa missed its chance for three straight wins. Forward Jordan Schroeder scored his team’s lone goal, as Iowa fell to 3-13-2-2 at home this season. Iowa heads to Chicago to meet the Wolves at 7 PM on Friday.

Iowa used its power play to strike for the game’s first goal at 4:37 of the first period. Forward Grayson Downing corralled the puck on the right-wing wall and fired a cross-ice pass to Christoph Bertschy. The rookie winger sent a one-touch pass to Jordan Schroeder, who was camped out in the Rockford slot.  Schroeder redirected the pass between the legs of goalie Michael Leighton for his eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 Iowa lead. Rockford evened the scoring at 1-1 with a power-play goal of its own at 9:32. Forward Ryan Hartman took a pass from Ville Pokka at the top of the right-wing circle and rifled a wrist shot to the Iowa net. Pierre-Cedric Labrie tipped the shot past Leland Irving for his 10th goal of the year.

Rockford claimed a 2-1 lead at 2:30 of the second period when former Iowa Captain Jake Dowell set up Ryan Haggerty. Defenseman Kirill Gotovets rimmed a pass behind the Iowa net for Dowell. The IceHogs centerman snuck a pass to the front of the Iowa net and Haggerty redirected it past Irving for his fourth goal of the year. The IceHogs claimed a 3-1 lead at 16:14 of the period off Chris DeSouza’s fourth goal of the season. Defenseman Ville Pokka started the play, zipping a pass to Daniel Paille in the Iowa zone. From the right-wall, Paille tossed the puck to the Iowa net and DeSouza jammed it in past Irving for the two-goal lead.

The Wild held a straw poll of presidential candidates with the fans voting throughout the game. Bernie Sanders won the democratic category with 49% of the votes.  He was followed by Hillary Clinton (42%) and Martin O’Malley (9%). In the republican category, Donald Trump claimed the victory with 41% of the votes. Ben Carson finished a distant second with 22% of the votes. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz tied for third with 10%, while Jeb Bush finished with 4%. After a road game in Chicago on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7 PM, the Wild hosts a postgame concert following its’ game against the San Jose Barracuda on Jan. 16. The concert is headlined by country star, CAM. Cam’s song “Burning House” is a Grammy nominee for “Best Country Solo Performance” of the year. The concert is sponsored by NASH FM, NASH ICON, Tree Town Festival, Jim Beam Apple and Gregg Young Chevrolet in Norwalk. Additional ticket packages and passes are available for purchase. The BrewDog Pack is also available for the game. The deal includes a ticket, a beer, a hotdog and one free (bud or bud light) beer at Legends American Grill.

Iowa puts on Kids Winterfest, presented by BCP Live, on Sunday, Jan. 17 when it hosts the Stockton Heat at 5 PM.  The first 1,000 fans to the game receive a Crash OYO minifigurine, presented by Fast Signs and Lazer 103.3. The team will be holding a postgame autograph session following the conclusion of the matchup with Stockton. Fans may purchase the Subway / Star 102.5 Combo pack, starting at $12 per person, which includes a ticket, a hot dog, one soda and one subway coupon.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday. The Iowa Wild 2015-16 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
