 MILWAUKEE HOLDS OFF IOWA FOR 4-3 WIN

Wild Remains on the Road – Visits Grand Rapids on Saturday

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Iowa Wild (15-25-1-1, 32 points) were defeated by the Milwaukee Admirals (24-12-2-3, 53 points) 4-3 in front of 11,562 fans on day at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Forward Austin Watson beat Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson with 6:37 left in regulation, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the Admirals their ninth straight win. Iowa scored twice over a 1:16 span early in the third period, erasing a 3-1 deficit and tying the game. Milwaukee goalie Marek Mazenec (13-8-3) made 25 saves for the win, his fourth straight. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (7-16-1) had 16 saves in the road loss. Center Tyler Graovac led the Wild offensively with his 14th goal and an assist. Rookies Zack Mitchell and Matt Dumba also scored in the defeat. Iowa will visit Grand Rapids on Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT.

The two teams traded goals in first period, starting with Viktor Arvidsson’s strike 52 seconds into the game. Defenseman Anthony Bitetto and goalie Marek Mazanec had the assists, as the Admirals pulled in front 1-0. Arvidsson used a speed burst to get around the defense and beat goalie Johan Gustafsson for his 15th goal of the year. The Wild answered back quickly, tying the game 1-1 at 3:12 of the first period. Marc Hagel carried the puck into the Milwaukee zone and rifled a shot towards the net. Mazanec made the save, but could not control the rebound. After Brett Bulmer tipped the rebound, center Tyler Graovac snuck the puck into the net. His team-leading 14th goal of the year sent the teams into the first intermission tied.

The Admirals tallied the only goal of the second period, as Colton Sissons buried a rebound for his 12th goal of the year. Bitetto and Kevin Fiala each had a hand in the goal, which came merely 1:10 into the second frame.

Milwaukee’s lead blossomed to 3-1 at 1:35 of the third period. Forward Richard Clune scored his fourth goal of the year to push the Admirals up by two. Austin Watson had the lone assist on the tally. Iowa pushed back to pull within a goal at 2:20 of the period, as Zack Mitchell swept in a rebound. Kurtis Gabriel and Graovac each had an assist on Mitchell’s 11th goal of the year. 1:16 later, defenseman Matt Dumba blasted a slapshot from the point, beating Mazanec for his fifth goal of the season and a 3-3 score. Defenseman Jon Blum had the lone helper on the goal. Milwaukee broke the tie at 13:23 after Watson beat Gustafsson for his 16th goal of the year. Bitetto and Tyler Aronson helped set up the game-winning tally for the 4-3 final.

After a stop in Grand Rapids, Iowa heads into the All-Star break. After the mid-season classic, Iowa returns home to face Grand Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., kicking off a three-game home stand. It’s also a Throwback Thursday, where fans may purchase sodas for one dollar, presented by 95 KGGO. On Friday, Jan. 30, the Wild hosts the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Also on Friday, Iowa celebrates Military Appreciation Night, where the first 1500 fans receive camou koozies, sponsored by NASH 92.5. Friday’s game is also a $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Fans may purchase 10-ounce domestic beers through the first period of play. Iowa finishes its home stand against Hamilton on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Wild will also hold AHA Heart Day, where the first 2500 fans receive mini sticks, presented by ABC 5 WOI-TV.  

The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
