GRIFFINS STUN IOWA WILD IN LAST MINUTE FOR 3-2 WIN
Iowa Welcomes the Texas Stars and Milwaukee Admirals Next Weekend
Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (4-2-0-0, 8 points) were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins (4-2-1-1, 10 points) 3-2 in front of 3,825 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday. Grand Rapids forward Landon Ferraro scored a shorthanded goal with 35 seconds remaining in regulation, breaking a 2-2 tie and elevating the Griffins to victory. Grand Rapids goalie Tom McCollum (3-0-0) picked up the win with 26 saves. Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper (2-2-0) suffered the loss with 23 saves, which ended Iowa’s three-game winning streak. Grand Rapids defenseman Nathan Paetsch and forward Luke Glendening also scored in the victory. Iowa center Warren Peters had a goal and an assist, while winger Jason Zucker added a goal. The Wild continues a five-game home stand with Texas at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Grand Rapids claimed a 1-0 lead at 7:12 of the first period, as defenseman Nathan Paetsch scored his first goal of the season. Forwards Corey Emmerton and Teemu Pulkkinen worked the puck around to the Wild blueline. Paetsch snapped a wrist shot through traffic and past goalie Darcy Kuemper for the game’s opening goal. The Griffins made it a 2-0 lead in the last minute of the first period. Luke Glendening zipped into the Iowa zone and snuck around a Wild defender. Glendening beat Kuemper over the shoulder at 19:08 for the two-goal cushion. Pulkkinen and Jeff Hoggan each added an assist on Glendening’s first goal of the year.
Iowa stormed back to even the score just 4:58 into the second period. Forwards Jason Zucker and Warren Peters scored 2:20 apart within the first five minutes of the period to tie the game 2-2. Zucker started the scoring, firing a shot past goalie Tom McCollum at 2:38. Center Warren Peters and defenseman Steven Kampfer each had an assist on the goal. Zucker’s first goal of the year trimmed the Iowa deficit to 2-1. Peters tied the game just 2:20 later with his first goal of the season. Defensemen Brian Connelly and Kyle Medvec each had an assist on Peter’s first goal of the year at 4:58, tying the game 2-2.
Grand Rapids broke a 2-2 tie with 35 seconds remaining in the third period. Corey Emmerton picked off a pass in the Griffins zone and led a rush back into the Iowa zone. Emmerton found Landon Ferraro on the right wing, who then beat Darcy Kuemper with a wrist shot to give the Griffins the eventual 3-2 win at 19:25.
Prior to the game, Iowa General Manager Jim Mill announced that forward David Steckel has been released from a professional tryout agreement (PTO). Steckel played in four games for the Wild, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
The Wild remains at home with the Texas Stars on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:05 PM. Friday night, fans may purchase $2.00 ten-ounce beers, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Iowa rounds out its five-game homestand on Sunday, Nov. 3 with the Milwaukee Admirals.
