WILD DONATE $10,000 TO “TAME THE HUNGER” IN DES MOINES PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Sep 29, 2020

The Iowa Wild proudly announced today the donation of $10,000 to “Tame The Hunger”, as part of a community initiative to help feed those less fortunate in the Des Moines metro.

In previous seasons, Iowa Wild players and staff as well as volunteers from the community have teamed up to package meals for those in need. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s program will feature staff members from the Wild, Affinity Credit Union, Amerigroup, BMW of Des Moines, MercyOne, and Tito's helping to deliver pre-packed meals.

Later today, volunteers will pick up “pantry packs” from The Outreach Program in Des Moines and deliver them to the Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) Welcome Center where they will be distributed to more than 60 schools and programs, helping students and families across the DMPS District. More than 29,000 meals will be donated through the “pantry packs”, feeding almost 700 families, with each family receiving 42 meals.

COVID-19 safety measures have been put in place for today’s efforts, as all participants will wear masks and follow state and federal guidelines.

“We recognize that there is need in all areas of our city, so we are committed to proving the pantry packs to the students and families experiencing food insecurity no matter where they attend school,” Jennifer Stalder SUCCESS Elementary and Secondary Supervisor said.

“Food insecurity is a serious issue that impacts so many in our community,” said Affinity Credit Union CEO, Jim Dean. “In the spirit of our mission of ‘building better lives’, Affinity Credit Union is proud to partner with the Iowa Wild to help fight food insecurity.”

Reinvesting in the community in which they serve is incredibly important to Affinity. In addition to their sponsorship of “Tame the Hunger”, Affinity Credit Union has donated over $50,000 to local charities since 2019, including their annual “12 Days of Giving” campaign which runs each holiday season. Affinity CEO Jim Dean also serves on the Board of the Food Bank of Iowa and is currently the Chairman of their Philanthropy Committee.

In addition to Affinity Credit Union, the Wild are working this event in conjunction with Amerigroup, BMW of Des Moines, Capital Ortho, MercyOne, NCMIC, The James Law Firm, and Tito’s
