AFTER FURTHER REVIEW – GRAYSON DOWNING

2015-16 was an up and down season to say the least for Iowa Wild rookie center Grayson Downing.  By the time the dust settled on the team’s third season in the AHL, Downing’s name was scribbled all over the Iowa record books.

The first team record that Downing attached himself to was the longest point streak in team history. Not only did Downing tie the record once, he tied it a second time a month later in the season, becoming the only skater in team history to record points in six straight games. The Abbotsford, BC native recorded a point in six straight from Nov. 14-29 and again from Dec. 26 – Jan. 10. Center Tyler Graovac is the only other player in team history record a point in six straight games.

Downing completely re-wrote the Iowa Wild rookie team records in 2015-16, putting together the most impressive first-year campaign in team history.  In all, Downing set seven new team rookie records. They are as follows:

Goals: 19

Points: 40

Plus-Minus: +3

Power-play goals: 6

Power-play assists: 7

Power-play points:  13

Overtime goals: 1

He also tied the team rookie mark, joining Zack Mitchell and Erik Haula as the only rookies to record three game-winning goals in one season.

Expectations for the 2016-17 season are high for Downing, who will be expected to contend for a roster spot in Minnesota. His biggest challenge will be staying healthy, as the centerman missed 20 games for Iowa this season.  For his AHL career, Downing has 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points in 61 AHL games.

After his prolific rookie season, Downing moved into the top ten for numerous team categories. He is among the team’s all-time leaders for six different offensive categories.
