GRIFFINS SWEEP WILD WITH 3-2 WIN

Iowa Continues Six-Game Homestand on Tuesday at 5:35 P.M.

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (25-28-6-4, 60 points) was defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins (41-18-2-4, 88 points) 3-2 in front of 6,359 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday. Trailing 2-0 after the first period of play, the Griffins scored three goals in the middle period to erase the deficit on their way to a weekend sweep of the Wild. Winger Mitch Callahan scored the difference maker at 12:41 of the second period, as Grand Rapids improved to 11-1-0-1 over the team’s last 13 games. Grand Rapids goalie Petr Mrazek (19-5-1) stopped 16 of 18 for the win.  Forward Kris Foucalt had a goal and an assist, as the Wild dropped its third straight decision. Goalie John Curry (7-8-2) stopped 28 of 31 and Iowa fell to 11-18-3-1 at home this year. Forward Carson McMillan also scored in the defeat. The Wild continues a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at 5:35 p.m. against the Charlotte Checkers.

Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:40 of the first period off a power-play goal by Carson McMillan. Forwards Stephane Veilleux and Kris Foucault worked the puck to the Griffins crease. McMillan snapped a shot past goalie Petr Mrazek for the game’s opening goal, his 12th goal of the year. Iowa made it 2-0 when Foucault jammed in a loose puck for his eighth goal of the season at 9:39 of the first period. Defensemen Tyler Cuma and Steven Kampfer each had an assist on the goal, with Foucault potting a rebound off Kampfer’s shot.

Early in the second period, Grand Rapids trimmed the deficit in half at 3:26. Forwards Martin Frk and Andrej Nestrasil worked the puck to the Iowa blueline. Defenseman Ryan Sproul slipped a shot through traffic and past John Curry for his ninth goal of the season and a 2-1 Iowa lead. Grand Rapids used a 5-on-3 power play to tie the game at 11:25 of the middle period. Defenseman Nathan Paetsch snapped a wrist shot from the point, which made it through traffic and past Curry for the 2-2 score. Forward Jordan Tootoo had the lone assist on Paetsch’s fourth goal of the year. The Griffins moved in front 3-2 at 12:41 of the second period off Mitch Callahan’s 24th goal this season. Nestrasil snapped a shot from the left wing in the Iowa zone and Curry made the initial save. Callahan swept in and tucked the rebound past Curry for his club’s third straight goal. Sproul added an assist on goal on the game’s final goal.

Iowa closes out its six-game stand with Charlotte on Tuesday at 5:35 P.M. and Wednesday at 7:05 P.M. The game is a $2 Tuesday, where fans can purchase any level ticket with a $2 discount. 200 Level seats will be available for $2 to the first 200 fans to purchase upper level seats. Patrons will also be able to purchase $2 sodas, $2 popcorns, and $2 10-ounce domestic drafts (21 and older) – through the first period of play. Also, select merchandise items will be available for only $2. Taco John’s will also provide a Taco coupon to every fan on their way into the game and if the team scores four goals each fan will receive an additional coupon upon exiting. The team continues a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at 5:35 p.m. against the Charlotte Checkers. The Wild also closes out its six-game stand with the Checkers on Wednesday at 7:05 P.M. On Wednesday, fans that bring a Subway receipt to the Wells Fargo Arena box office may purchase a ticket for $5.
