WILD COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN 5-3 DEFEAT TO BARONS
Iowa Remains in OKC For A Rematch on Sunday Afternoon
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild (2-6-0-0, 4 points) were defeated by the Oklahoma City Barons (3-2-2-0, 8 points) 5-3 in front of 2,913 fans at the Cox Convention Center on Saturday night. The Barons built a four-goal lead by the early stages of the second period only to watch the Wild trim the deficit to one in the last minute of regulation. Iowa’s line of Marc Hagel, Ryan Walters and Brady Brassart combined for all three goals on the evening, with each player picking up multiple points on the night. Walters started the rally in the second period and Hagel scored twice in the third to aid the comeback bid. Barons forward Ryan Hamilton scored twice to lead Oklahoma City to a 2-2-0-0 mark at home. Oklahoma City goalie Richard Bachman (1-1-0) stopped 28 shots to preserve the win. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (2-4-0) made 19 saves in a defeat. Iowa concludes a three-game road swing at Oklahoma City on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The Barons claimed an early lead, with Ryan Hamilton striking for the game’s first tally at 1:28. Defenseman David Musil and forward Justin Williams each had a hand in the opening goal that made it 1-0 Barons. Oklahoma City struck again at 19:02 of the first period when Oscar Klefbom found Luke Gazdic in front of the Wild cage for a redirection. Gazdic’s first of the year made it 2-0 and was also assisted by Travis Ewanyk. The Barons connected for a late power-play goal, making it 3-0 with a five-on-three tally at 19:59. Hamilton beat the buzzer for his fourth goal of the year from Matt Ford.
The Barons made it a 4-0 lead at 3:58 as Jujhar Khaira found the back of the Iowa net. Kale Kessey snapped a pass to the crease for Khaira to redirect for his first goal of the year. Iowa got on the board at 14:05 of the second period when Ryan Walters scored his first goal of the season. His unassisted tally trimmed the deficit to 4-1 through two periods of play.
Just over two minutes into the third and final period, Iowa pulled within a pair of goals after Marc Hagel connected for his second goal in his last two games. Center Brady Brassart set up Hagel at 2:05 to trim the Barons’ lead to 4-2. Iowa pulled Gustafsson for the extra skater with less than 1:30 remaining in regulation. Hagel connected for his second of the period off a shot from the high slot with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Brassart and Walters each had an assist on the play. The Barons sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:51 by Kale Kessey for the 5-3 final.
Iowa concludes a three-game road trip with a stop in Oklahoma City before returning home for a three-game home stand. The Wild returns home on Thursday, Nov. 6 to host Rockford at 10:30 a.m. Thursday’s game with the IceHogs is also School Field Trip Day, where the first 5,000 fans receive an Iowa Wild drawstring backpack, compliments of KJJY. Iowa rounds out its home stand against Chicago with a two-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. Saturday night is Ladies Night, where the first 2,500 fans receive an Iowa Wild ice scraper sponsored by Greater Iowa Credit Union. All ladies (21 and over) may purchase glasses of wine for a $1.00 discount. The Wild will also host Special Olympics Night on Saturday. Sunday is Pucks N’ Paws day, where the first 2,500 fans receive pet tags, compliments of Anderson Animal Hospital. Fans may bring their dog to the game with the purchase of a special $14 ticket, with $2 going back to the Animal Rescue League. Fans are invited to bring a pet food item to donate, for which they receive a free ticket to an upcoming Iowa Wild game. It is also a Subway Family Four Pack game, where fans may purchase four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, starting at $48.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team’s 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Season tickets to see the Wild play at Wells Fargo Arena start at just $9 per game.
