Wild breaks numerous records in the rout

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – Iowa Wild (22-13-7-3; 54 points) broke several franchise records in the team’s 8-0 victory against Bakersfield Condors (17-18-7-1; 42 points) Friday night at Rabobank Arena for the team’s first-ever win in California in history.

While running its overall winning streak to four games, Iowa set records for goals in a period (six), goals in a game (eight), margin of victory (eight) and points in a game (21; 8g, 13a). Wild goaltender Niklas Svedberg (23 saves) earned his second shutout of the season and eighth of his career. The win was his fifth straight, setting a Wild record for consecutive victories by a goaltender. The win was also the most lopsided victory in the AHL this season.

The first period saw the Wild take a 1-0 lead on an even-strength tally by forward Gerry Mayhew at 9:29 of the stanza. Mayhew’s goal was his ninth of the season, with forward Justin Kloos registering his 20th assist of the campaign.

Heading into the second period, the Wild led 1-0 with each team recording nine shots.

The Wild exploded for six goals in the second period with two tallies coming on the power play. Scoring goals in the period were Zack Mitchell (unassisted), Kyle Rau (assisted by Sam Anas and Zach Palmquist), Colton Beck (assisted by Brennan Menell and Carson Soucy), Mitchell again (assisted by Cal O’Reilly and Mario Lucia), Anas (assisted by Kloos and Rau) and Pat Cannone (assisted by Lucia and Seeler).

The second period ended with the Wild leading 7-0 and holding a 20-17 shot advantage. The six second period goals were the most goals in a period by the Wild, breaking the previous record of four, originally set on Feb. 6, 2016 at Chicago.

Wild forward Landon Ferraro potted Iowa’s eighth score of the contest, breaking the club record for most goals in a single game. Assisting on Ferraro’s goal were forwards Luke Kunin and Christoph Bertschy. It was the only score of the third period and when the final whistle sounded, the Wild recorded its most lopsided win in franchise history, while also outshooting Bakersfield 29-23.

Sixteen different skaters recorded a point in the win, with five players recording multi-point nights (Anas, Lucia, Mitchell, Kloos, Rau). The win also extended the team’s point streak to six consecutive contests (5-0-1-0). Iowa has now recorded three goals or more in 12 of the last 14 games and Friday marked the first time since Jan. 7 in which Iowa outshot its opponent.

Iowa continues its California trip with a matchup against Ontario Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Puck drop is at 8:00 p.m. CT.
