Wild Rattles off Four Goals In The First Period

ROSEMONT, IL  – The Iowa Wild (14-28-3-3, 34 points) defeated the Chicago Wolves (22-20-1-2, 47 points) 5-1 in front of 9,053 fans on Saturday night at Allstate Arena. The Wild blasted the Wolves with four goals over a 5:57 first-period span and goalie Steven Michalek (2-0-0) took care of the rest with 36 saves. Wild forwards Brett Sutter, Grayson Downing and Rob Bordson, as well as defenseman Zach Palmquist each scored in the game’s opening period. Chicago goalie Jordan Binnington (10-8-2) was tagged with the loss. He was chased from the net at 15:09 of the first after allowing his third goal of the period and finishing with seven saves. Backup goalie Niklas Lundstrom finished up, stopping 12 of 13 without the decision. Wild forward Christoph Bertschy added an empty-net goal, as Iowa improved to 8-13-0-1 on the road this year. Palmquist and forward Michael Keranen each posted a multi-point game in the win. Iowa returns home on Friday to host Grand Rapids at 7 P.M.

Iowa jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening period, starting the scoring at 11:50 of the first frame for the 1-0 lead. Center Brett Sutter scored off a rebound, sneaking his fourth goal of the season past Jordan Binnington. Left wing Brett Bulmer and right wing Michael Keranen each picked up an assist on the opening goal. Less than three minutes later, defenseman Zach Palmquist beat Binnington at 14:19 of the first period for a 2-0 lead. Right wing Zack Mitchell and left wing Colton Beck each had a hand in Palmquist’s third goal of the year. Just fifty-seconds later Iowa struck again, as Grayson Downing ripped a backhand shot over the shoulder of Binnington for the 3-0 lead. Binnginton was pulled in favor of Niklas Lundtsrom. The Wild made it four goals in 5:57 to expand its lead to 4-0 at 17:47 after Rob Bordson redirected a Tyson Strachan shot. Defenseman Mike Reilly added an assist on Bordson’s fifth goal of the season.

Chicago got on the scoreboard at 19:31 of the second period, trimming the deficit to 4-1. Defenseman Chris Butler floated a shot from the blueline that slipped through traffic and past Michalek. Defenseman Jordan Schmalz and Danny Kritso helped set up Butler’s third of the season on the power play.

The Wolves pulled goalie Niklas Lundstrom in the final minute and Christoph Bertschy scored an empty-net goal with 38 seconds remaining. Palmquist and Keranen added the assists on Bertschy’s eighth goal of the year and a 5-1 final score.

The Wild returns home next weekend for a pair of games against the Grand Rapids Griffins, beginning with Pink in the Rink on Friday, Feb. 12. Iowa is teaming up with Susan G. Komen of Iowa to raise awareness for breast cancer with Pink in the Rink Night. The team will don pink-in-the-rink themed jerseys and the first 1,000 fans will receive pink t-shirts courtesy of 107.5 KISS FM. Fans are encouraged to wear all pink to the game for a pink out. Friday’s game includes a shootout challenge and ceremonial-puck drop with breast cancer survivors. A special lighting ceremony is also planned for all survivors and those who have perished. The Wild will also be hosting a postgame jersey auction following the game. Friday is a $2 beer night, sponsored by 100.3 The Bus. The “Bring Your Buds Bundle” is also available for purchase, including one ticket, one 16 oz. Budweiser or Bud Light at the game, one hotdog, one popcorn, $1 off a Budweiser or Bud Light 25 oz. can during the Wild game, and one free beer at Carl’s Place following the game. The Wild and Griffins faceoff again on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. Saturday is Crash’s Birthday and the team is hosting a Mascot Party and Super Hero Day, sponsored by NASH FM and NASH ICON. The first 1,500 fans receive a super hero poster. The team concludes the evening with a postgame mascot autograph session. Fans are encouraged to bring their own skates for a free postgame skate, courtesy of Grip-Tite Foundation Repair. Saturday is also Ladies Night, presented by Jim Beam and NASH FM. Ladies Night deals include $1 off glasses of wine, $5 for a regular Beam Orchard Twist, and $10 for the Beam Orchard Twist in a mason jar. “Bring Your Buds Bundle” packages will also be available for purchase.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday.
