Green Comes Back to Win With Shootout Surge

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild hosted its annual Green-White Scrimmage on Sunday night at Wells Fargo Arena, as Team Green beat Team White 5-3. Team White erased a 1-0 lead and claimed a 2-1 lead after regulation, but Team Green took control in the shootout, outdueling Team White in the extra frame 4-1 for the 5-3 final. Jeff Hoggan scored the lone regulation goal for Green and added a tally in the shootout for the win. Team White’s Colton Beck and Zach Palmquist each added regulation markers.  Unofficially, goalie Steve Michalek finished with six saves on seven shots for Team Green. Fellow goalie Adam Vay stopped the first ten shots he saw, but surrendered a few late goals to Team White in regulation. The Iowa Wild heads to North Dakota this upcoming weekend for a pair of preseason games against Manitoba starting on Saturday in Fargo at 7 P.M.

Team Green opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first half of play. 8:20 into the initial frame, center Jeff Hoggan snapped a backhand shot past Steve Michalek for the 1-0 lead for the green squad. The play started with an up-ice rush and finished with a centering pass by Chris Francis. He found Hoggan, who finished off the play, helping Green take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Team White quickly tied the game 1-1 merely 3:18 into the second half after forward Colton Beck jammed a shot past Adam Vay. Center Grayson Downing led a 2-on-1 with Beck. Downing centered for Beck, who was stopped by Vay initially, but Beck swept the rebound past the rookie goalie to tie the game 1-1. White struck late during the 3-on-3 portion of the second half, as defenseman Zach Palmquist beat Vay with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, giving White a 2-1 regulation lead.

The two squads participated in a full-team shootout after 40 minutes of regulation action. Team Green took control, outscoring Team White 4-1 in the extra session for the 5-3 final. Team White defenseman Jace Coyle struck for his team’s lone goal. Hoggan, Maxime Fortunus, Francis and Sam Warning all scored to lead team Green to victory.

The Wild practices at Wells Fargo Arena at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, before moving to Metro Ice for the next two days. Iowa practices at Metro on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 before departing for preseason games against Manitoba in North Dakota.

The Iowa Wild plays a pair of preseason games, both will be in North Dakota against the Manitoba Moose – the Winnipeg Jets AHL affiliate. Iowa and Manitoba meet at Scheels Arena in Fargo, ND on Sat., Oct. 8 at 7 P.M. The two teams will play a second preseason game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, ND on Sun., Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday.
