Same Two Team Meet Again on Saturday in Des Moines at 7 PM

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (1-3-0-0, 2 points) was defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (1-2-0-0, 2 points) 8-3 on Friday night in front of 4,531 fans at Wells Fargo Arena. Charlotte scored five goals in the first period en route to its first victory this season. Checkers forward Andrew Poturalski scored twice and added two assists to lead the way. Charlotte goalie Michael Leighton (1-0-0) made 22 saves for the win. Wild goalie Steve Michalek (1-0-0) was pulled after 6:35 of action and surrendering three goals on as many shots. Alex Stalock (0-3-0) was saddled with the defeat, stopping 23 of 28 in relief. Iowa rookie center Adam Gilmour, set up two goals in the defeat. Iowa and Charlotte play again on Saturday at 7 PM.

Charlotte jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first seven minutes of the opening period. Checkers forward Andrew Poturalski scored first, potting a rebound at 5:39 of the period. Defensemen Trevor Carrick and Matt Tennyson assisted the goal. Just 16-seconds later, Charlotte’s Patrick Dwyer made it a 2-0 game with a shot from the slot. Defenseman Jake Chelios had the lone assist on Dwyer’s first goal of the year.  Merely 41-seconds later, Charlotte struck again, as defenseman Keegan Lowe rifled a shot from the left-wing circle that beat goalie Steve Michalek. Forwards Poturalski and Derek Ryan had the helpers on the tally. Michalek was pulled in favor of Alex Stalock after surrendering a third goal in just 56 seconds. Charlotte’s lead grew to 4-0 at 10:29, as Poturalski netted his second of the game and fourth goal of the year. Patrick Brown and Lowe each had the assists on the goal. Iowa got on the board at 10:45, as forward Mario Lucia scored off a wrist shot from the left-wing circle, beating Michael Leighton for his first goal of the season. Center Adam Gilmour collected his first pro point with an assist on the play. The Checkers finished off the scoring at 15:35 with a power-play goal by Ryan, extending the lead to 5-1. Tennyson had the lone assist on Ryan’s second goal of the season.

The Checkers made it a 6-1 score at 3:25 of the middle period, as Wallmark scored his first goal of the season. Forwards Sergey Tolchinsky and Poturalski each had a hand in the goal. The Wild trimmed the deficit back to four goals as Kurtis Gabriel tallied his first goal of the season at 3:39 of the second period. Gilmour added his second assist of the night on the goal. 

Charlotte made it 7-2 on Valentin Zykov’s goal at 13:07 of the third period. Ryan and Roland McKeown had the assists. At 18:50, Christoph Bertschy scored an unassisted goal for the Wild, making it a 7-3 game. A minute and three seconds later, Brendan Woods scored for the Checkers. The goal was unassisted for the 8-3 final score. 

Iowa continues a seven-game home stand on Oct. 22 with the Charlotte Checkers at 7 PM. Saturday night is Ladies Night, with drinks specials throughout the game. Fans may enjoy Jim Beam drink specials, as well as drink specials on Barefoot Wine. The Brewdog Pack is available for purchase, which includes a Bud Light and a hot dog at the game, as well as a Bud Light after the game at Legends Bar and Grill. 

Iowa continues a seven-game home stand on Oct. 25 at 7 PM with the Cleveland Monsters. For every Tuesday game of the year, Kids Eat Free (12 and under), presented by Goodhue-Nolte and 96.5 Country. Fans that present a Subway coupon will be able to purchase a ticket for $5.

Iowa’s last game of its opening seven-game home stand is on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 PM with the Milwaukee Admirals. It’s a Hat Trick or Treat night, which begins with Pregame Trick or Treating on the Concourse. Friday’s game is also a $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. There will be a Postgame Skate after the game for all fans.
