The Wild opened the scoring with the game’s first goal at 5:59 after some aggressive forechecking from Mario Lucia and Colton Beck. Lucia stripped the puck in the corner from a Griffins defender and then centered for Colton Beck, who snapped a wrist shot past goalie Eddie Pasquale for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 Iowa lead. Grand Rapids tied the game at 17:03 of the opening frame, the play started with a turnover in the neutral zone created by Tomas Nozek. Matt Lorito led a 2-on-1 rush into the Iowa zone and set up Martin Frk for his seventh goal of the season and a 1-1 tie. The Wild used its first power play of the game to score in the last minute of the first period.  Set up on the right-wing wall, Jordan Schroeder sent the puck down low, finding Beck to the right of the Griffins net at 19:10. Warner unleashed a wrist shot from the point and the puck trickled past Pasquale for Warner’s second goal of the year. The Griffins countered at 16:16, as center Matt Lorito stole the puck at center ice and raced in alone on a breakaway. Lorito snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Alex Stalock, scoring his eighth goal of the year and trimming the Grand Rapids deficit to 3-2.

The Griffins used a late power play to tie the game with nine seconds remaining in regulation. Forwards Mitch Callahan and Lorito worked the puck to the left-wing side for Frk. The Griffins winger blasted a slap shot past Stalock for his second of the night and eighth goal of the season for a 3-3 score. The goal forced a scoreless overtime and an eventual shootout.
