Iowa Extends Points Streak To Five Games

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Iowa Wild (10-10-1-1, 22 points) defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins (11-6-0-2, 24 points) 4-3 in a shootout in front of 8,093 at Van Andel Arena on Friday night. After surrendering a late goal to allow overtime and an eventual shootout, Iowa’s Colton Beck ended a three-round shootout with a goal to extend the team’s season-long points streak to five games (4-0-1-0). Iowa goalie Alex Stalock (6-6-0) made 27 saves for the win and extended his personal unbeaten string to six games (5-0-1-0). He stopped all three Griffins shootout attempts. Beck finished with a goal and an assist, as his club ended the Griffins eight-game winning streak over Iowa at Van Andel Arena (dating back to March of 2014). Grand Rapids forward Martin Frk scored twice, including the game-tying goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to force OT. Grand Rapids goalie Eddie Pasquale (3-1-2) stopped 25 of 28. Iowa ends its seven-game road swing on Saturday night with a visit to the Chicago Wolves at 7 PM.

The Wild opened the scoring with the game’s first goal at 5:59 after some aggressive forechecking from Mario Lucia and Colton Beck. Lucia stripped the puck in the corner from a Griffins defender and then centered for Colton Beck, who snapped a wrist shot past goalie Eddie Pasquale for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 Iowa lead. Grand Rapids tied the game at 17:03 of the opening frame, the play started with a turnover in the neutral zone created by Tomas Nozek. Matt Lorito led a 2-on-1 rush into the Iowa zone and set up Martin Frk for his seventh goal of the season and a 1-1 tie. The Wild used its first power play of the game to score in the last minute of the first period.  Set up on the right-wing wall, Jordan Schroeder sent the puck down low, finding Beck to the right of the Griffins net at 19:10. Beck centered to the slot for Pat Cannone, who promptly posted his fourth goal of the year, giving Iowa a 2-1 lead after one period of play.

The Wild lead grew to 3-1 at 9:30 of the second period. Cycling the puck in the Griffins zone, defenseman Scott Czarnowczan and right wing Alex Tuch worked the puck to Hunter Warner at the blueline. Warner unleashed a wrist shot from the point and the puck trickled past Pasquale for Warner’s second goal of the year. The Griffins countered at 16:16, as center Matt Lorito stole the puck at center ice and raced in alone on a breakaway. Lorito snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Alex Stalock, scoring his eighth goal of the year and trimming the Grand Rapids deficit to 3-2.

The Griffins used a late power play to tie the game with nine seconds remaining in regulation. Forwards Mitch Callahan and Lorito worked the puck to the left-wing side for Frk. The Griffins winger blasted a slap shot past Stalock for his second of the night and eighth goal of the season for a 3-3 score. The goal forced a scoreless overtime and an eventual shootout.

In the shootout, Stalock stopped all three Griffins attempts to preserve the win. Beck was the lone shootout goal scorer, giving Iowa the difference for a victory.
