IOWA DEFEATS SAN ANTONIO 5-4 IN A SHOOTOUT
Iowa Plays Next Four On The Road, Returns For Teddy Bear Toss at Home Dec. 15
San Antonio, TX – The Iowa Wild (8-11-0-0, 16 points) defeated the San Antonio Rampage (10-10-0-2, 22 points) 5-4 in a shootout in front of 3,531 fans at the AT&T Center on Wednesday night. Rookie Tyler Graovac scored in the seventh round of the shootout, helping Iowa pick up its third straight win on the road. Wild forward Jason Zucker and defenseman Brian Connelly were instrumental in the victory, with each player posting a goal and two assists. Connelly’s game-tying goal with 5:42 left in regulation, forced overtime and helped set up the victory. Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper (5-7-0) stopped 44 shots in regulation and six of seven in the shootout win. Defenseman Jonathon Blum scored and added an assist, as Iowa improved to 5-1-0-0 on the road this season. Defenseman Steven Kampfer also scored in the win. San Antonio goalie Jacob Markstrom (4-3-1) made 28 saves in regulation and five of seven in the shootout. Iowa continues a six-game road trip at Texas on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
San Antonio capitalized on an early five-on-three power play, with Vincent Trocheck connecting for the game’s first goal. Defenseman Ryan Whitney worked the puck down low to forward Bobby Butler, who fired a pass across the Wild crease. Goalie Darcy Kuemper knocked down the pass, but Trocheck slipped the rebound into the Iowa net for his 10th goal of the year and a 1-0 San Antonio lead. Iowa countered with a power-play goal of its own at 4:40. Forwards Jason Zucker and Warren Peters worked the puck down low in the Rampage zone. Peters found defenseman Jonathon Blum on the back door feed, setting up Iowa’s first goal. Blum pocketed his third goal of the season, beating goalie Jacob Markstrom and tying the game 1-1. The Rampage pushed back in front 2-1 at 10:24 of the first period. Defenseman Colby Robak rifled a shot off a faceoff, sneaking the puck through traffic and past Kuemper. Forwards Greg Rallo and Drew Shore each picked up an assist on Robak’s third goal of the year.
Iowa tied the game 7:53 into the middle period off defenseman Steven Kampfer’s second goal of the year. Forward Carson McMillan and defenseman Brian Connelly helped out on the play, setting up Kampfer for a one-timer from the right wing circle. Less than two minutes later, San Antonio reclaimed the lead at 3-2, as defenseman Ryan Whitney floated a shot from the Iowa blueline, through traffic and past Kuemper for the power-play score. Whitney’s second goal of the year was assisted by forwards Garrett Wilson and Jon Matsumoto at 9:28. Iowa used its power play to pull even with San Antonio at 17:50 of the middle frame. Defenseman Jonathon Blum set up forward Jason Zucker, who blasted a one-timer past Markstrom. Connelly added an assist on Zucker’s seventh goal of the year, tying the game 3-3. Just 14 seconds later, Steve Pinizzotto put in a rebound to beat Kuemper for his fifth goal of the year. Forwards Erik Selleck and Danny Urban each added an assist on the play, as San Antonio carried a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.
Iowa tied the game 4-4 at 14:18 of the third period off a power-play goal by Connelly. The Wild defenseman tucked in a rebound with 5:42 left in the third period. Stephane Veilleux and Zucker each had an assist on Connelly’s first goal of the season.
After a scoreless overtime, the two teams headed to a shootout. Iowa forwards Tyler Graovac and Jason Zucker each scored in the shootout, while goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped six of seven. Rampage forward Drew Shore scored his club’s lone shootout goal, while goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped five of seven in the shootout.
The Wild continues a six-game road trip on Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Texas. After two games at Texas (Friday and Saturday) and Abbotsford, the team returns home on Sunday, Dec. 15 to host Rockford at 4:05 p.m. For Sunday’s game, the team will hold its first Teddy Bear Toss, where fans are encouraged to throw a stuffed animal on the ice for charity. Fans will be permitted to through Teddy Bears on the ice after the Wild score its first goal of the night.
