Iowa took advantage of its only power play of the opening frame. Center Pat Cannone worked a give-and-go with left wing Colton Beck upon entering the Rockford zone. Cannone sent the puck to the left-wing wall for Beck, who fired it back to Cannone as he cut towards the Rockford net. Cannone redirected the pass from back past Lars Johnasson for his eighth goal of the year and a 1-0 Iowa lead.

Rockford evened the score at 1-1 just 1:14 into the second period after Chris DeSouza gave Rockford its first goal of the night. Hogs defenseman, Carl Dahlstrom launched a shot from the right point that snuck through traffic and past Alex Stalock. DeSouza was credited with his fourth goal, tipping the shot past Stalock. Evan Mosey added an assist on the tally. The Wild countered to regain the lead at 13:57 of the second period with Cannone netting his second of the game.  Iowa used an up-ice rush to set up its second goal of the evening. Defenseman Mike Reilly slid a pass to the left wing for Ryan Carter, who carried through the left-wing circle towards the goal line and flipped a pass to Cannone on the back door. Cannone buried his ninth goal of the year, beating Johansson and sending Iowa to the locker room with a 2-1 lead at the break.
