Iowa Wraps up Road Trip In Abbotsford, Returns For Teddy Bear Toss at Home Dec. 15 

Abbotsford, BC, Canada – The Iowa Wild (8-13-1-0, 17 points) were defeated by the Abbotsford Heat (20-6-1-1, 42 points) 6-2 in front of 1,409 fans at the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night. The Heat erased a 2-1 deficit midway through the opening period, scoring two goals in 15-seconds and finishing with five unanswered tallies.  Defenseman Brett Olson had a goal and two assists, leading the Heat to its league-high 20th win of the season. Abbotsford goalie Joni Ortio (12-1-0) made 22 saves and forward Ben Street added two goals for the win. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (3-4-0) made 20 saves in the defeat. Iowa forward Brett Bulmer scored and added an assist, as Iowa fell to 5-3-1-0 on the road this season. Iowa concludes its six-game road trip in Abbotsford on Thursday at 9 p.m. (CT).

The Wild claimed a 1-0 lead with the fastest goal of the season. Erik Haula beat Joni Ortio just 1:04 into the game, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead. Left wing Brett Bulmer had the lone assist on Haula’s fifth goal of the season. The Heat pulled even with the Wild at 7:52 of the first period. Michael Ferlund tied the game 1-1, scoring his sixth goal of the season. Brett Olson and Markus Granlund each had an assist on Abbotsford’s first goal of the game. Iowa took advantage of its first power play, with Bulmer scoring his team-leading ninth goal of the year. Defenseman Jonathon Blum had the lone assist, as Iowa claimed a 2-1 lead at 8:29. The Heat countered with a pair of goals over a 15-second span. Ben Street tallied his 15th tally of the year at 14:40 and Greg Nemisz added his fifth goal of the year at 14:55. Street scored from the bottom of the left-wing circle, with Josh Jooris and Brendan Connelly each picking up an assist. Corban Knight tossed the puck to the Iowa net and Nemisz deflected the puck past Johan Gustafsson for the 3-2 lead.

The Heat doubled its lead to 4-2 at 5:10 of the second period. Granlund picked up a puck off the end wall and tucked it behind Gustafsson for his 11th goal of the year. Olson and Kane Lafranchise each had an assist on the tally. Street tallied his second goal of the night at 14:55 of the middle frame. Corban Night set up the play, feeding Street in the slot for his 16th goal of the year. Defenseman Chad Billins also had an assist, as the Heat claimed a 5-2 lead.

Abbotsford made it a 6-2 lead at 11:10 of the third period. Defenseman Brett Olson jammed a loose puck past Gustafsson. Lafranchise played the puck to the Iowa net and Olson redirected the puck in for the power-play goal. Ferlund added an assist on the team’s fifth straight tally.

The Wild concludes its six-game road trip on Thursday, Dec. 12, at Abbotsford at 9 PM (CT). Iowa returns home on Sunday, Dec. 15 to host Rockford at 4:05 p.m. For Sunday’s game, the team will hold its first Teddy Bear Toss, where fans are encouraged to throw a stuffed animal on the ice for charity. Fans will be permitted to through Teddy Bears on the ice after the Wild score its first goal of the night. The game marks the beginning of a six-game homestand for the Wild. Grand Rapids visits on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7:05 p.m.  Hamilton will visit on Friday, Dec. 20 and San Antonio on Saturday, Dec. 21.
