ADMIRALS SNEAK PAST WILD 4-3 IN A SHOOTOUT

Iowa Heads to Grand Rapids For Two Games on Friday and Saturday

Milwaukee, WI – The Iowa Wild (14-14-2-2, 32 points) were defeated by the Milwaukee Admirals (17-10-5-1, 40 points) 4-3 in a shootout in front of 2,496 fans at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Monday night. Iowa went to a shootout for the third straight game, falling to the Admirals in the extra session after getting outscored 2-0 in the shootout. Despite the shootout loss, the Wild now have points in 12 of the last 15 games (8-3-2-2).  The victory was Milwaukee’s fourth straight over Iowa, behind the play of Taylor Beck, who led the Admirals with a goal and an assist. Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg (5-12-1) stopped 21 of 24 in regulation and all four attempts in the shootout win. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (5-5-1) stopped 28 of 31 in regulation and three of five attempts in the shootout defeat. Wild forwards Brett Bulmer and Chad Rau, as well as defenseman Kyle Medvec each scored in the team’s first visit to Milwaukee this year. Iowa continues a six-game road trip on Friday with a 6 p.m. (CT) meeting in Grand Rapids.

Iowa scored the only goal of the first period, striking for a 1-0 lead 4:02 into the opening frame. Left wing Brett Bulmer picked off a pass in the Iowa zone and carried the puck into the Milwaukee zone. With a defenseman draped all over him, Bulmer protected the puck and spun towards the Admirals crease. He then slipped a backhand shot through the legs of Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg for his team-leading 10th goal of the year. The goal ended a 163:47 scoreless drought for Iowa against Milwaukee, dating back to the second period of the game between the two clubs on Nov. 3.

Milwaukee stormed back in the second period tying the game 1-1 just 1:10 into the middle frame. With the first power play of the game, Admirals forward Austin Watson slipped a puck past Johan Gustafsson from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Forward Taylor Beck added an assist on Watson’s ninth goal of the year. Milwaukee claimed the lead at 8:23 of the period, when Colton Scissons connected for the tally. Defenseman Anthony Bitetto found Scissons in the slot and the forward wristed a shot over the shoulder of Gustafsson for the 2-1 lead. Defenseman Bryan Rodney added an assist on Scissons’ team-leading 13th goal of the year.

In the third, Iowa registered an early goal at 1:30, tying the game 2-2. Defenseman Kyle Medvec flipped a shot from the blueline, through traffic and past Hellberg for his second goal of the year. The Admirals came back over two minutes later, regaining the lead at 3-2. Taylor Beck ripped a one-timer past Gustafsson at 3:50 of the third period for his ninth goal of the year. Simon Moser and Charles–Olivier Roussel each had an assist on the Admirals third goal of the night. Iowa rallied late to tie the game 3-3 at 11:57 when Chad Rau scored his first goal of the season. Defenseman Brian Connelly set up the play with a floater to the net and Rau tipped the puck past Hellberg. Defenseman Jon Landry added an assist on the play for the game’s final goal.

After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to a shootout, the Wild’s third straight game with a shootout decision. Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg stopped all four Wild attempts, while Taylor Beck and Vinny Saponari scored in the shootout for the Admirals.

Iowa will continue its six-game road swing in Grand Rapids with the Griffins on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT). The team will return home on Jan. 15 to host Toronto at 7:05 p.m.
