MARLIES SNEAK PAST WILD IN OT 4-3

Iowa Hosts Lake Erie on Friday and Saturday

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (15-16-3-2, 35 points) were defeated by the Toronto Marlies (21-11-2-2, 46 points) 4-3 in overtime in front of 4,554 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday night. Toronto defenseman T.J. Brennan scored the game-winning goal in overtime and added three assists to lead his team to victory. Marlies forward Spencer Abbott picked up three points in the game (two goals, one assist) to increase his team’s record to 5-1-0-1 in the last seven games. Toronto goalie Drew MacIntyre (17-9-2) stopped 27 shots in the first meeting between the two clubs. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (6-7-1) stopped 33 shots in the loss, including 13 in the third period. Iowa forward Carson McMillan scored a goal and added an assist in the defeat. The Wild hosts Lake Erie on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 12:35 p.m.

The Wild opened the scoring at 3:56 of the first period with a goal by forward Jake Dowell. After a turnover in the Toronto zone, the Iowa center rifled a shot past Marlies goalie Drew MacIntyre, giving his club a 1-0 lead. Iowa forwards Warren Peters and Marc Hagel assisted on Dowell’s fifth goal of the season. The Wild continued to score at 13:05 with a goal by defenseman Steven Kampfer, increasing his club’s lead to 2-0. The defender tipped in a pass from Iowa forward Jim McKenzie down low for his fourth goal of the season. Wild forward Carson McMillan had an assist on the play.

The Marlies got on the scoreboard at 5:25 of the second period with a power-play goal by Spencer Abbott. The Toronto forward blasted a wrist shot over the shoulder of Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson, cutting the Wild’s lead in half at 2-1. Marlies forward Greg McKegg and defenseman T.J. Brennan each picked up an assist on Abbott’s seventh goal of the season.

Abbott tied the game 2-2 at 13:02 of the third period, scoring his second power-play goal of the game. Brennan and Toronto forward Josh Leivo each assisted on the play. The Wild regained the lead at 14:04 with a goal by Iowa forward Carson McMillan, giving his club a 3-2 lead. The Iowa center chipped in a rebound after an initial shot by forward Raphael Bussieres. Wild defenseman Brian Connelly also picked up an assist on the play. The Marlies countered at 16:12 with a goal by Leivo, locking the game 3-3. Brennan picked up his third assist of the game, along with an assist by defenseman Stuart Percy.

The Marlies scored just 1:21 in overtime with a goal by Brennan. The defenseman blasted a shot from the right-wing circle, beating Gustafsson. Abbott and defenseman Korbinian Holzer each picked up an assist on the game-winning goal.

Iowa continues a three-game homestand on Friday with the Lake Erie Monsters at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 12:35 p.m. Friday’s game includes a PB&J Drive, presented by Zeroez. Fans are asked to bring jars of peanut butter or jelly to donate for Movethefood.org. Those who donate receive a voucher for a ticket to an upcoming Iowa Wild home game. Friday is also $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Every Friday, fans (21 and over) may purchase $2.00 ten-ounce domestic drafts through the first period of play. Saturday is the first matinee home game with the 12:35 p.m. faceoff. The team celebrates Kids Winterfest with plenty of kids’ activities on the concourse and the first 5,000 fans receive ThunderSticks.  It is also a Subway Family Four Pack Night.
