IOWA FALLS IN OVERTIME AT CHICAGO 6-5

Preseason Comes to A Close, Season Opener is Oct. 10 at San Antonio

Hoffman Estates, IL – The Iowa Wild (1-0-1-0) were defeated by the Chicago Wolves (1-1-0-0) 6-5 in overtime on Friday night in a preseason game at Triphan Community ice Center. Chicago forward Yannick Veilleux scored 2:31 into overtime to give the Wolves the decisive tally. Iowa rookies Olivier Archambault and Zack Mitchell each posted a second consecutive multi-point game. Mitchell netted two goals and Archambault scored his fourth preseason goal in just two games. Forwards Jay Gregoire and Sebastien Geoffrion also had a multi-point game, as Iowa finished the preseason without a loss in regulation. Goalie Johan Gustafsson suffered the OT defeat for Iowa, stopping 20 of 26. Chicago’s Ty Rattie registered a hat trick, including the game-tying goal with 1:41 left in regulation. Iowa begins its season on Friday, Oct. 10 in San Antonio at 7:30 p.m.

The Wild’s Zack Mitchell opened the scoring just 1:01 into the first period for the 1-0 Iowa lead. Defenseman Corbin Baldwin had the lone assist on the play.  The Wild converted off a power play at 9:38 of the first period when Jamie MacQueen struck for his second of the preseason. Rookie defender Guillaume Gelinas and forward Jordan Schroeder set up the 2-0 lead. Chicago got on the board at 13:44 when Ty Rattie netted a shorthanded goal for the 2-1 deficit. Iowa reclaimed its two-goal lead at 15:35 after Olivier Archambault scored his fourth goal of the preseason. Forwards Sebastien Geoffrion and Jay Gregoire set up the 3-1 Iowa lead. Chicago cut it to 3-2 at 19:14 after Ty Rattie scored his second of the period.

After a scoreless second period, Chicago’s Shane Harper scored twice in the first 10:10 to give his club a 4-3 lead. Harper netted even-strength goals at 4:25 and 10:10 of the third. Iowa tied the game at 14:14 when Gregoire buried his first goal of the preseason. Archambault and Geoffrion each had an assist on the play that made it 4-4. Zack Mitchell scored his second of the game at 16:53 to push the Wild back in front at 5-4. Forward Marc Hagel had the lone assist on the tally. Rattie completed his hat trick at 18:19, tying the game 5-5 and forcing overtime.

At 2:31 of overtime, forward Yannick Veilleux beat Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson for the 6-5 Chicago victory.

After the game, Iowa Wild General Manager Jim Mill announced the club has released defensemen Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel and Jacob Johnston, as well as forward Sebastien Geoffrion. 

Iowa begins its second season in the American Hockey League with a two-game road trip in Texas. The team plays at 7:30 p.m. in San Antonio on Friday, Oct. 10. The Wild stops in Cedar Park, TX to face the defending Calder Cup Champion Texas Stars on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. Iowa hosts Opening Weekend on Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct 18 at 7 p.m. against the Milwaukee Admirals.

The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center and begins on the road Oct. 10 in San Antonio.
