OVER 8,000 SEES ADMIRALS HOLD OFF WILD 4-3

Iowa and Milwaukee Meet Again on Saturday at 7 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild (0-3-0-0, 0 points) were defeated by the Milwaukee Admirals (3-0-0-0, 6 points) 4-3 in front of 8,102 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night. The Admirals scored twice in the first 1:50 of the middle period and held off a late charge from Iowa for the one-goal win. Milwaukee forwards Colton Sissons and Austin Watson tallied the back-to-back goals early in the second period to propel the Admirals to victory. Wild goalie Johan Gustafsson (0-2-0) stopped four of eight shots, taking the loss in 21:50 of action. He was pulled in favor of John Curry, who made 15 saves in a relief appearance. Goalie Marek Mazanec (3-0-0) made 27 saves on 30 shoots for the Milwaukee’s third straight victory. Rookie forward Zack Mitchell and left wing Curt Gogol each picked up goals for Iowa in the defeat. The Wild rallied late in third period with a goal from Brett Sutter, but failed to complete the comeback. Iowa hosts Milwaukee again at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Milwaukee captured the first lead with a power-play goal from right wing Pontus Aberg at 5:27 of the first period. Left wing Brendan Leipsic and forward Miikka Salomaki aided Aberg in the goal.  Rookie forward Zack Mitchell tied the game 1-1 for Iowa and recorded his first career goal with a backhanded rebound at the 14:29 mark of the first. Forwards Tyler Graovac and Michael Keranen both worked the puck to Mitchell for the score. The Admirals reclaimed the lead with a goal from Aberg at the 18:12 mark of the period. Defenseman Joe Piskula and Leipsic both assisted Aberg’s second goal of the night and a 2-1 lead after one period of play.

The Admirals scored two goals within the first two minutes of the second period. Center Colton Sissons picked up the first goal, scoring on the power play at the 39-second mark. Piskula tallied his second assist on the goal. Center Austin Watson found the net about a minute later for Milwaukee at 1:50, which was assisted by Leipsic and Piskula. After Watson’s goal, Wild goalie Johan Gustafsson was pulled in favor of John Curry. Iowa left wing Curt Gogol scored his first goal on the season at 9:45 to bring the Wild within two of the Admirals. Forwards Zack Phillips and Jordan Schroeder aided the power-play goal, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Wild Center Brett Sutter closed the gap late in the third, scoring his first goal of the season at 19:14. Defenseman Danny Syvert and Schroeder each tallied an assist for the 4-3 final.

The Wild continues a four-game home stand with on Saturday, Oct 18 at 7 p.m. against the Milwaukee Admirals. On Saturday, the team celebrates Local Heroes Night and the first 5,000 fans will be handed an Iowa Wild 2014-15 poster schedule. The annual Guns-N-Hoses game takes place on Saturday, Oct. 18 with games at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The following weekend, Iowa welcomes the Charlotte Checkers for a two-game set at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday Oct. 25. Friday the 24th is College Night, featuring $2 beers, presented by the 100.3 The Bus. Saturday night is Youth Sports Night, where the first 1,500 youths (12 and under) receives a White Iowa Wild home jersey, compliments of NASH FM.

The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
