Iowa Back Home Tuesday at 7 PM With Chicago at Wells Fargo Arena
SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Iowa Wild (13-21-1-1, 28 points) were defeated by the San Antonio Rampage (21-12-3-0, 45 points) 8-3 in front of 9,117 fans on Saturday night at AT&T Center. Trailing 3-2 to Iowa heading into the second period, San Antonio rattled off six straight goals to defeat the Wild, including a pair of goals 2:40 apart in the second period to take the lead for good. Seven Rampage skaters finished with a multi-point game in the victory, led by forward Garrett Wilson, who posted a goal with two assists. Rampage goalie Dan Ellis (16-8-1) made 28 saves in the win. Iowa forwards Zack Mitchell and Marc Hagel each finished with a goal and an assist. Defenseman Matt Dumba added a goal in the road defeat. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (7-14-1) stopped 37 of 43 shots in the loss. He was replaced with Parker Milner after 48:30 of work. Iowa returns home to host Chicago on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The two teams combined for five goals and 28 shots on goal on the game’s opening period. Iowa opened the scoring at 0:48 of the first period, as Zack Mitchell scored off a centering pass from Marc Hagel. Brett Sutter played the puck behind the Rampage net for Hagel, who set up Mitchell’s 10th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. San Antonio answered back with a pair of goals, tying the game 1-1 at 6:25 of the opening frame. Defenseman Josh McFadden snapped a shot through traffic, scoring his first goal of the year. Center Brett Olson and defenseman Blake Parlett each had an assist on the team’s first goal of the night. San Antonio claimed a 2-1 lead at 11:49 of the first period with Mark Mancari’s seventh goal of the year. Defenseman Greg Zanon and forward Corbin Knight found Mancari on the left wing. Mancari snapped a shot to the Iowa net, which bounced off a Wild defender and past Gustafsson. The Wild tied the game 2-2 at 11:49 of the first period, as defenseman Matt Dumba helped his club cash in on a power play. Mitchell and Danny Syvret had a hand in the play, picking up an assist on Dumba’s fourth tally of the season at 19:02. Iowa scored again at 19:43 of the opening frame, as center Tyler Graovac forced a turnover in the Rampage zone. He stole the puck and found Hagel in the slot. Hagel snapped a wrist shot past Ellis with 17 seconds left in the period, scoring is seventh goal of the year for a 3-2 lead after one period of play.
San Antonio tied the game 3-3 at 11:00 of the second period. McFadden set up Connor Brickley, who beat Gustafsson for his 10th goal of the year and tied the game. The Rampage pushed ahead 4-3 just 2:40 later off Garrett Wilson’s 14th goal of the year. Defensemen Jesse Blacker and Steven Kampfer set up the team’s fourth goal of the night at 13:40. Wilson tipped Kampfer’s shot from the blueline to give his club the lead heading into the second intermission.
The Rampage scored its third unanswered goal at 4:41, as Blacker finished off a rush with a feed from Wilson. Bobby Butler added an assist on Blacker’s third goal of the season and a 5-3 Rampage lead. San Antonio increased its lead to 6-3 at 8:30 of the final period off Logan Shaw’s 10th tally of the season. Rocco Grimaldi set up the play, finding Shaw open on the backdoor score. Forward Ryan Martindale added an assist on the tally. Gustafsson was pulled after the goal, finishing with 37 saves on 43 shots in 48:30 of work. Parker Milner relieved Gustafsson, making his Iowa and AHL season debut. San Antonio claimed a 7-3 lead with a power-play goal by Kampfer at 16:20 of the third. Mancari and Wilson helped set up Kampfer’s eighth goal of the year. Center Brett Olson tipped a shot past Milner at 19:48 for the 8-3 final. Alex Petrovic and Shaw each had an assist on the game’s final goal.
Iowa returns home on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. to face the Chicago Wolves. The team celebrates Taco Tuesdays against Chicago, presented by Taco John’s. It’s also a two-for-one Tuesday, where fans may purchase one (1) attack end ticket and receive a second ticket free, sponsored by Hits 99.9 FM. Also, those that bring a Subway receipt may purchase a ticket for $5. After a trip to Rockford on Friday, Jan. 16, Iowa returns home for a three-game home stand starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 with the Lake Erie Monsters. Iowa is holding a sport equipment drive in its first game with Lake Erie, sponsored by Scheels. For each item donated, the fan receives a ticket voucher for a future game. The drive benefits Courage League Sports. The first 1,000 fans receive an Iowa Wild Piggy Bank, presented by Mercy.
On Sunday, Jan. 18, the Wild and Monsters meet again at 3 p.m. Also on Sunday, the Wild celebrates Kids WinterFest, featuring Xbox Dance Revolution, face painting, balloon artists and a sign station, presented by Fast Signs. The first 1,500 youths to the game (12 and under) receives an Iowa Wild green youth jersey, presented by KDSM FOX 17 & Scheels. The team is also hosting its first ever Baby Derby, presented by Me & Mommy To Be. Fans will be able to watch the baby’s crawl to see which is the fastest in central Iowa. Fans will also be able to purchase the Subway Combo Pack, presented by Subway and 104 More. The Subway Combo Pack includes one ticket, one hot dog, one soda and a Subway coupon, starting at just $12. The Wild also hosts a public skate after the game, presented Grip Tite. All fans are reminded to bring their skates.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
