Iowa Continues Home Stand Thursday and Friday

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (22-44-2-2, 48 points) were defeated by the Texas Stars (36-21-13-1, 86 points) 6-4 in front of 3,136 fans on Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena. With the game tied 3-3 late in the second period, forward Greg Rallo scored to put the Stars up for good. Forwards Brett Ritchie, Gemel Smith, Devin Shore and Kevin Henderson also scored for Texas in the road win. Texas goalie Jack Campbell (12-14-5) made 33 saves on 37 shots in the victory. Forward Jared Knight (1g, 1a) and defenseman Joel Chouinard (2a) each tallied multi-point games for Iowa. Defensemen Jon Blum, as well as forwards Stephane Veilleux and Brett Sutter also scored for Iowa in the loss. Iowa goalie John Curry (12-20-2) stopped 31 of 36 shots in the defeat. Iowa hosts the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 9.

The Stars opened the scoring 5:52 into the first period when forward Brett Ritchie fired a rebound past Iowa goalie John Curry on the power play. Forward Brendan Ranford and defenseman Matt Mangene assisted Ritchie for his 14th goal this season, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead. Texas extended its lead when forward Kevin Henderson muscled the puck into the net at the 7:37 mark. Defensemen Julius Honka and Cameron Gaunce aided Henderson for his sixth goal this year and the 2-0 lead. Iowa drew within one after defenseman Jon Blum launched a one-timer past Texas goalie Jack Campbell at the 16:15 mark on a five-on-three power play. Forward Grayson Downing and defenseman Joel Chouinard set of the play for Blum’s 10th goal this season, making it 2-1 Stars.

Texas widened the gap at 2:42 of the second period when rookie forward Gemel Smith scored. Smith took advantage of a Wild turnover, drilling a snapshot into the net for the 3-1 Stars lead. Forward Matej Stransky assisted Smith for his 10thgoal this season. Iowa again drew within one when forward Brett Sutter tipped the puck into the net at 10:27 of the period. Defenseman Stu Bickel and forward Jared Knight aided Sutter for his 11th goal this year, making it 3-2 Stars. Iowa tied the game at 3-3 when Captain Stephane Veilleux scored on a rebound at the 13:41 mark. Chouinard and rookie forward Brady Brassart assisted Veilleux on his third goal this season. Texas regained the lead 18 seconds later when forward Greg Rallo scored at 13:59 of the period. Rallo’s 25th goal this year was set up by forwards Travis Morin and Derek Hulak for the 4-3 lead.

In the third period, Texas forward Devin Shore scored his third goal of the year at 5:09 of the period. Defenseman Julius Honka and forward Scott Glennie assisted Shore on the play for the 5-3 lead. Iowa closed the gap when forward Jared Knight rifled a backhander into the net at 6:39 of the period. Knight’s fourth goal this season was assisted by rookie forward Pavel Jenys and rookie defenseman Collin Bowman, making it 5-4 Stars. Morin added an insurance tally, scoring an empty-net goal at the 19:35 mark. Morin’s 21st goal of the season was unassisted for the 6-4 final.

Iowa continues its four-game home stand with the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 9. It’s a Throwback Thursday, where fans may purchase popcorn for one dollar, presented by 95 KGGO. Also, those who bring in a Subway receipt may purchase a $5 ticket at the box office. Iowa finishes its home stand against Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 10. It’s Fan Appreciation night featuring a team poster giveaway to the first 5,000 fans, sponsored by Mercy Medical Center, Prairie Life Fitness, Edwards Printing and MB2 Raceway. The team is also holding a Chuck-a-Duck at Friday’s game, where fans may purchase rubber ducks to throw on the ice during intermission. All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Youth Emergency Shelter and Services. It’s also STEM Night, where a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student who designs the best helmet to reduce concussions for hockey players, presented by Des Moines University. It’s also a $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Fans may purchase 10-ounce domestic beers for only $2 through the first period of play.

After a road game in Chicago on Sunday, Apr. 11, the Wild welcomes the Toronto Marlies for the final regular season home game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 14 – celebrating Fan Appreciation Night. During the game, Iowa is giving away a multitude of coupons from corporate sponsors. It’s also a Taco Tuesday – presented by Taco Johns, where each fan that comes to the game receives a coupon for a free crispy beef taco from Taco Johns. It’s also two-for-one Tuesday, where fans may purchase one attack end ticket and receive a second ticket free, sponsored by Hits 99.9 FM. Also, those who bring in a Subway receipt may purchase a $5 game ticket at the box office.
