Rookie to Suit Up in 2016 Toyota AHL All Star Classic

DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Wild General Manager Brent Flahr, in conjunction with the American Hockey League (AHL), announced on Thursday that Iowa defenseman Gustav Olofsson has been named to the 2016 AHL Western Conference All-Star team. The 2016 Toyota AHL All Star Classic, takes place in Syracuse, NY from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

Olofsson, becomes only the second Iowa player to earn the mid-season honor, joining defenseman Matt Dumba (2015) as the only players in team history to be named to the All Star team. The 21-year old defenseman makes his first ever All Star appearance. The Boras, Sweden native was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the second round (#46 overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.  The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder has played in 33 games for Iowa this season, securing seven assists and ranking third among all Iowa defenders in points.  Olofsson received his first NHL call up this season and made his NHL debut in Boston on Nov. 19, 2015. In Iowa’s 2014 season opener, he was injured and missed the entire 2014-15 season.

He initially joined Iowa as an amateur out of Colorado College, turning pro on Apr. 2, 2014. Olofsson scored his first pro goal in his debut at Grand Rapids. Overall, the Iowa defender has played in 41 AHL games, scoring one goal and totaling eight points. Prior to join Iowa, the blueliner played one season at Colorado College, picking up eight points (4g, 4a) in 30 games played in 2013-14. Olofsson played in the USHL for Green Bay from 2011-13, earning USHL All Rookie Team honors for the 2012-13 season.  

Each of the AHL’s four divisions will be represented by 13 players: seven forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders. Rosters were determined by committees of AHL coaches, and all 30 AHL teams are represented by at least one All-Star.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 31 (8 p.m. ET) will keep its traditional format, with All-Stars from the Eastern Conference squaring off against All-Stars from the Western Conference in seven skills events.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Challenge will take place on the evening of Feb. 1 (7 p.m. ET); instead of a traditional 60-minute game, the AHL’s All-Stars will be divided into four teams, one representing each of the league’s divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific). The teams will then play a round-robin tournament featuring six games of nine minutes each; the first half of each game will be played at 4-on-4, and the second half at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the championship, a six-minute game played at 3-on-3.

The Wild heads to Milwaukee on Jan. 9 before returning home on Sunday, Jan. 10 for a 5 p.m. game against the Rockford IceHogs. Subway and Star 102.5 Combo pack is available for purchase for Sunday’s game. The combo pack includes one ticket, one hot dog, one soda, and one Subway coupon for $12.

The Wild hosts a postgame concert following its’ game against the San Jose Barracuda on Jan. 16. The concert is headlined by country star, CAM. Cam’s song “Burning House” is a Grammy nominee for “Best Country Solo Performance” of the year. The concert is sponsored by NASH FM, NASH ICON, Tree Town Festival, Jim Beam Apple and Gregg Young Chevrolet in Norwalk. Additional ticket packages and passes are available for purchase.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday. The Iowa Wild 2015-16 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team’s 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena.
