Nevins and La Porte Returned To Quad City
DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Wild General Manager Brent Flahr announced on Wednesday that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed defenseman Mike Sdao (suh-Day-oh) to a professional tryout agreement (PTO). In addition, Flahr announced the team has signed forward Gerald Mayhew to an amateur tryout agreement (ATO). Finally, Flahr announced forwards Jack Nevins and Nolan La Porte have been released from a PTO.
Sdao, 27 (7/3/89), joins Iowa from the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL, where he posted nine goals and 13 points in 52 games played. He placed third on the team with 140 penalty minutes. Over the course of his four-year career, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has played in 135 AHL games, scoring nine goals and totaling 22 points, as well as adding 336 minutes in penalties. The Niwot, CO native has played in the AHL from 2012-17, seeing most of his action with Binghamton, with an additional stint in Rochester. Sdao attended Princeton University from 2009-13, scoring 26 times and totaling 54 points in 118 collegiate games. The Ottawa Senators drafted the big defenseman in the seventh round (#191 overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Mayhew recently completed a four-year career at Ferris State University, playing in 150 games for the Bulldogs. The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder forward scored 52 goals and added 67 goals for 119 collegiate points. Mayhew led the Bulldogs in scoring in each of the past three seasons, scoring 17 goals and adding 18 assists for 35 points in 33 games as a senior. He posted career bests for assists and points as a junior, setting up 25 goals and totaling 41 points in 41 outings. Mayhew played in Cedar Rapids from 2011-13, scoring 36 goals and totaling 77 points in 117 USHL games for the RoughRiders.
Nevins and La Porte were pointless in their Iowa debuts on Mar. 4 at Rockford, a 2-1 Wild win. Both players are expected to rejoin the Quad City Mallards, Iowa’s ECHL affiliate.
After a six-game road trip with stops in Chicago, Rockford, Texas and Milwaukee, Iowa returns home to play the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 6 PM at Wells Fargo Arena. The St. Patrick’s Day game features a postgame concert with Gaelic Storm, sponsored by 100.3 The Bus, Jim Beam and My Satellite Guy. VIP packages are available starting at $20. The first 1,500 fans to the game receive an Iowa Wild Irish themed hat, sponsored by 95 KGGO and LIUNA. In a partnership with Jim Beam and NASH FM, fans 21 and older are able to purchase the “The Big Ginger” drink special. It is also Jim Beam Night. Subway Combo Packs are available for purchase at the game. Brewdog packs are also available for purchase at the game, presented by Legends American Grill and Bud Light. The Wild will also don St. Patrick’s Day themed specialty jerseys for the game. The team wears the specialty jerseys for all three home games in March, culminating with a live postgame jersey auction on Saturday, Mar. 31.
