CHICAGO PULLS AWAY FROM IOWA 4-2

Wild and Wolves Conclude Series on Sunday

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (2-9-0-0, 4 points) were defeated by the Chicago Wolves (7-2-2-0, 16 points) 4-2 in front of 6,263 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. After heading into the second period tied 1-1, forward Shane Harper and defenseman Brent Sopel each scored in the middle period for Chicago, pushing the Wolves lead to 3-1. The Wild pulled within a goal early in the third period when rookie forward Zack Mitchell scored his third goal of the season. An empty-net goal by forward Pat Cannone at the end of the third sealed the victory for Chicago. Iowa forward Marc Hagel also found the back of the net on Saturday, tallying his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Chicago goalie Matt Climie (5-1-1) made 32 saves on 34 shots to protect the win. Iowa goalie John Curry (0-4-0) stopped 25 of 28 shots in the loss. Iowa hosts Chicago again at 3 p.m. this Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Wolves took the lead late in the first period when defenseman Brent Regner found the back of the net at the 14:27 mark. The wrist shot, from just inside the blue line, marked Regner’s first goal of the season. Forward Sebastian Wannstrom and defenseman Mathieu Brodeur set up the goal that gave Chicago a 1-0 lead. The Wild responded 17:53 into the period when forward Marc Hagel fired a shot past Wolves goalie Matt Climie, tying the game 1-1. Hagel’s team-leading fifth goal of the season was aided by rookie forward Zack Mitchell.  

In the second period, Chicago recaptured the lead with a goal by forward Shane Harper at the 9:17 mark, making it 2-1 Wolves. Brodeur and forward Terry Broadhurst fed Harper the puck on the play for his fourth goal of the season. Chicago extended its lead 17:05 into the period when defenseman Brent Sopel recorded his first goal of the season for the 3-1 score. Wannstrom and forward Jeremy Welsh helped Sopel in his effort.

The Wild closed the gap to 3-2 in the third period when rookie forward Zack Mitchell notched his third goal of the season at 2:51. Hagel set up the breakaway, which brought Iowa within one goal of Chicago. The Wolves added another goal late in period when forward Pat Cannone scored an empty-netter to give Chicago a 4-2 lead. Wolves forwards Philip McRae and Regner assisted Cannone on the play.

Iowa concludes a three-game home stand against Chicago at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. Sunday is Pucks N’ Paws day, where the first 2,500 fans receive pet tags, compliments of Anderson Animal Hospital. Fans may bring their dog to the game with the purchase of a special $14 ticket, with $2 going back to the Animal Rescue League. Fans are invited to bring a pet food item to donate, for which they receive a free ticket to an upcoming Iowa Wild game. It is also a Subway Family Four Pack game, where fans may purchase four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, starting at $48. Iowa plays in Milwaukee on Wednesday prior to returning home for ALS Weekend on Nov. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m., welcoming the Oklahoma City Barons.       

The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April.
