IOWA WILD AND MARSHALLTOWN ANNOUNCE NEW COMMUNITY RINK IN BOONE

Jan 16, 2026

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild and MARSHALLTOWN today announced plans for the installation of a community ice rink to Boone, Iowa, this winter. The grand opening for the 13th Iowa Wild Community Rink will be held at the John Hansen Memorial Skating Rink & Shelter on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m.

“We are looking forward to opening a 13th Community Rink in Central Iowa,” said Allie Brown Korinek, Iowa Wild Vice President of Business Operations. “Over the past 13 seasons, the Iowa Wild have committed to growing the game of hockey throughout the state of Iowa. We are excited to bring the opportunity to skate outdoors to Boone residents.”

The Iowa Wild unveiled the first community rink, located in Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines, in December 2016. In the following years, the program expanded to include 12 rinks in total, located in Altoona, Ames, Ankeny, Carlisle, Grinnell, Indianola, Johnston, Marshalltown, Newton, Urbandale West Des Moines, and Waukee. Opening dates and maintenance updates for the Central Iowa community rinks are available on each community’s parks and recreation website. Rinks are free to the public.

“This year marks the beginning of our third year with the Iowa Wild Community Rinks program, and we are excited to celebrate the opening of the 13th rink in Boone," said Joe Carter, MARSHALLTOWN President & CEO. "This initiative brings Iowa communities together to enjoy the outdoors during the winter season and to create lasting memories with friends and family. We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Iowa Wild and play a role in carrying this tradition forward.”

“The Boone City Parks is thrilled to bring ice skating back to Boone residents thanks to the Iowa Wild through their Community Rink program, said Susan Thorngren, Boone City Park Commissioner. “We know the citizens of Boone have long enjoyed ice skating and have great memories of skating on the “pond” in Herman Park at least since the 1930’s.  When the pond was no longer available for skating, John Hansen initiated an area for an ice rink complete with skate rentals.  However, the new location came with many challenges and there have been several years without a rink.  Our new community rink from the Iowa Wild enables us to offer ice skating again for a new generation to create wonderful memories with friends and family.   One of the many activities planned for the near future includes a hockey clinic for young skaters! The Boone Park Commissioners are extremely grateful to the Iowa Wild for the ability to deliver a new ice rink, which has been a very popular request from the community.  “
