IOWA RALLIES FROM THREE-GOAL DEFICIT, BEATS TEXAS 4-3 IN SHOOTOUT
Oct 3, 2026CEDAR PARK, Texas - The Iowa Wild rallied from a three-goal third period deficit and beat the Texas Stars 4-3 in a shootout at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park on Saturday night. Riley Heidt (1-2=3) and Mason Shaw (1-2=3) recorded three points apiece while Gerry Mayhew scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout.
Iowa outshot Texas 8-6 in a scoreless first period.
Mike Sgargossa put the Stars ahead with a backdoor finish on the power play 6:39 into the middle frame.
The Stars outshot Iowa 18-17 through 40 minutes.
Sgarbossa struck again 17 seconds into the third period and Ellis Rickwood extended the margin to three goals when he slipped a rebound behind Riley Mercer (21 saves) 1:41 later.
Iowa responded with a pair of power-play goals midway through the period. Shaw and Heidt started the scoring when they combined to set up Tyler Pitlick at the top of the crease at 10:04. Shaw then found Heidt through the seam with a secondary assist from Kiersted to pull the Wild within a goal 2:07 later.
With 1:16 to play and Mercer pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Heidt and Rieger Lorenz dug the puck off the end boards and Shaw chipped a backhand over Arno Tiefensee (28 saves) to tie the game and force overtime.
Dylan Hryckowian had an opportunity to win the game for Texas in overtime, but Mercer stopped his penalty shot bid with a glove save.
After each team went scoreless in the first three rounds of the shootout, Mayhew beat Tiefensee with a deke to the backhand and Mercer stymied Rickwood to earn the win.
Iowa outshot Texas 32-24. The Wild went 2-for-7 on the power play while the Stars finished 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
Iowa hosts the Rockford IceHogs at Casey’s Center on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The first 1,500 fans will receive a magnet schedule, presented by Hicklin Garage Doors & KXnO.
